Why US is pushing India to restart Covid vaccine exports
NEW DELHI: The United States has been pushing India to restart vaccine exports as it looks to stem the global spread of the Covid pandemic.
The US is communicating regularly with India in bilateral and multilateral channels to discuss the supply of Covid-19 vaccines and inquire about its timeline for restarting vaccine exports, a senior Biden administration official told Reuters.
The supply of Covid vaccines will also be one of the key topics of discussion during the first in-person Quad leadership meeting in US on September 24.
Quad is a multilateral alliance of US, India, Australia and Japan.
During their virtual meeting in March this year, the Quad leaders had agreed to work closely on boosting Covid-19 vaccine supply.
However, the initiative was stalled after India was struck by the deadly second wave of the virus.
Since then, India's vaccine exports took a major hit as the country sought to prioritise immunisation of its population of over 1.3 billion people.
According to Axos, the Biden administration is now looking to push Modi to renew vaccine supply to the world through the global Covax initiative since it wants to mitigate the international spread of the virus.
"Vaccinating as much of the develo world, as quickly as possible, is in America's vital interest, because the uncontrolled spread of the virus inevitably produces more dangerous variants," the Axos report said.
The Biden administration said the issue of vaccine exports is being discussed but did not confirm whether it is tied to Modi's upcoming participation in the Quad summit.
India should first take care of the health of its population, just like USA, Europe, and Israel are doing. They cannot preach a different lesson to India, than what they followed.
so "Made in India" has power now...!!! ppl who snubbed India everytime in name of "blah blah" now need its importance...!!!
All are behind our Pyare Modiji.entire world depends on Indian now
This is the same country stopped exporting raw materials needed for vaccine production, before devastating 2nd wave hit India, to push Pfizer and Moderna into Indian markets as an arm twisting policy approach.
First US should pressurise UN to approve Covaxn..... Rest India will definitely do the needful
Our population is first priority, to hell with US.
Hypocrytic America! It not is not able to vaccinate its own people but also not giving suplus vaccines to any other country. Pfizer and moderna are eagerly waiting for 3rd wave!
Modi will do what is best for the country.
At the end, however the world would like to play their cards, India will stand tall. I hope people would realize this and work on it
Every country must decide on their own how to vaccinate its entire population and when to export vaccine to other countries. Each country must have their own strategy. It is not a matter to be decided by discussing with some other country!!
charity starts at home..ensure Indians have access to vaccines without having to wait for days.. then export the surplus to countries who want to give 'booster' shots
What about unused extra vaccines hoarded by rich nations. Why don't they donate them to develo world.
US is more interested in lobbying for Pfizer to India. It is just arm twisting. No more export till India is fully done with vaccinations of its own.
India could start exporting vaccines by January 2022. And definitely no charity Mr Modi. No free vaccines to Africa, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh or Afghanistan. Do NOT donate my tax money to disloyal countries.
Need More Land
No exports until covid is eradicated.
what is the point of exporting after covid is eradicated?
entire world is depending on India. Thanks Modiji for your governnance
India should not fall into all this and prioritize vaccination of its citizen first and achieve the target of vaccinating 80% eligible population before considering option to export vaccine to other nation.
Fully Vaccinate own people first, exports can wait. Countries that don't deserve any vaccine supply are Af and Pak.
I think we should keep ourselves as priority then the rest of the world.
