Cabinet approves Rs 11,400 crore National Mission on edible oils-oil palm
NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the Rs 11,040 crore National Mission on edible oils-oil palm (NMEO-OP) to reduce dependence on imported edible oils.
In a media interaction after the Cabinet meeting, information and broadcasting minister Anurag Thakur said that the scheme will have a special focus on he northeast region and the Andn and Nicobar Islands.
The plan focuses on increasing the area under oilseeds, enhance productivity of palm oil and help oilseed gardens.
It will also help in utilising the huge pential area and reduce import dependency for palm oil, the minister said.
The scheme also gives price assurance to oil palm farmers for fresh fruit bunches.
"Due to heavy dependence on imports for edible oils, it is important to make efforts for increasing the domestic production of edible oils in which increasing area and productivity of oil palm plays an important part," Thakur said.
The decision comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the new central scheme on August 15 during his Independence Day at Red Fort.
This is called visionary leaders…
Good step. N in the direction. Any commodity that's in huge demand within the country but has to be imported from elsewhere must be re-looked at with priority n its production enhanced in the country. Must've been done much earlier, but still as the saying goes - better later than never !! Kudos to Modi n his vision.
Congress go nment openly allowed palm oil import into INDIA, Since then farmers are not getting better price and switched to other crops. today INDIA importing 50% of its edible oil requirement.
This is not the step. Palm oil is not at all good for health. India should plan to increase the healthy cooking oils we already have for centuries. USA heart specialists have come out strongly ag inst all refined oils as being the main cause of heart problems.
That's difference between Progress vs Congress ...
Well Modiji, this is vision, innovation, creative thinking. Pappus wanted to continue impor of Edible oils for their own benefits.

Oil price reduced means bhakts will sell more pakodas. Economy will boost.
Good decision towards reducing on imports and saving national exchequer.
Actually, palm oil needs to be banned!!!! The worst oil for health!!! Strange that Go nment is actually encouraging Palm oil use!!!!
garbage ministers are investing on the most unhealthiest food product known to man
Lots of money. Hope they are utilised for stated purpose, and not used by po iticians and bureaucrats to increase their wealth.
As if palm oil is good for health.
A much-needed step!
Majority of the funds will be siphoned off to pockets of ambani/adani which will again import the same palm oil and brand it as local veg oil. These two will again share their profit with bjp/rss for again other project to come for them
This is good decision. The next non-BJP/RSS go nment will provide ch home produced palm oil to indian citizens. But this policy will destroy "Telu Adani's Fortunes"
This decision took 7 years even for NaMo to take.... forget of 70 years prior to that, but atleast we have something on ground now that will take care of problems once we start getting output
Mysian and Indonesian Palm oil exporters should start to see alternative business as India will stop import of Palm oil in next 5 to 10 years .
Its little vague. Its good if we can reduce import. But how long this project will take and what kind of output expected. When will be the funds cleared. We would like to see more implementation than plan. But lets hope its a good first step.
Palm oil is one the most unhealthy oil. I would have been happy if they had encouraged olive oil cultivation. Palm oil imports should be banned, even if country does not have alternative.
Master stroke by Modi go nment.
A step in the direction. It will not only help the farmers but also boost India's economy.
It's requires minimum 4 - 6 years to grow palm tree so we can take production. This means we have long way to go
种植棕榈树后至少需要4 - 6年我们才能产油。这意味着我们还有很长的路要走
