NEW DELHI: Student activists Natasha Narwal, Devangana Kalita and Asif Iqbal Tanha were released from jail, hours after Delhi high court granted them bail in connection with the north-east Delhi riots "conspiracy" case.

Narwal, Kalita and Tanha were arrested in May last year under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Natasha Narwal, whose father recently passed away due to Covid-19 while she was lodged in the jail, said she "received tremendous support" in the jail and affirmed that she will continue her struggle.

A division bench of Justices Siddharth Mridul and Anup J Bhambhani didn’t mince words in three separate bail orders, saying it was “constrained to say that it appears that in its anxety to suppress dissent and in the morbid fear that matters may get out of hand, the state has blurred the line between the constitutionally guaranteed ‘right to protest’ and ‘terrorist activity’.”
