Covid-19 in Karnataka: Families sell valuables, land to settle hospital bills
BENGALURU: Ramesh Gowda buried two of his family members — his father and brother who both died of Covid — in a span of a week. Their bills at a reputed private hospital in Mysuru amounted to a staggering Rs 16 lakh.
Gowda, who helped his father manage their farm in Srirangapatna taluk, Mandya district, is 25. His family sold valuables and used their meagre savings to meet medical expenses, but even that was not enough. “We had to sell two acres of our land located close to the Mysuru-Bengaluru highway to settle the final bill and cm the bodies,” said Gowda as he wept.
Now, Gowda stares at an uncertain future. He has the responsibility of taking care of his ailing mother and younger sister. “We now have no father and no money,” he said.
Sunil Kumar died of Covid in a private hospital in Bengaluru. His family mustered Rs 4 lakh for his treatment, but bills swelled to Rs 11 lakh. Sunil was the only earning member. Eventually, they mortgaged their house in Davanagere to pay the bill.
With private hospitals charging astronomical amounts for Covid care, many like Gowda and Sunil’s families are selling off inherited properties and family ornaments, besides exhausting their hard-earned savings.
While the go nment has capped prices for Covid-19 treatment in private hospitals, the scenario on the ground is very different. Private hospitals are supposed to charge Rs 8,000 per day for an oxygenated bed, Rs 9,750 for ICU bed without ventilator and Rs 11,500 per day for ICU bed with ventilator. In reality, they charge anywhere between Rs 20,000 to Rs 1 lakh per day.

Unfortunate but it is true, i know many situatins like this where they sold every thing to save their loved ones, when common citizens selling their homes for the treatment which was supposed to be free our leaders are bussy in constructing their pces. Sorry state of affairs
result of bribery and poor governance.. most hospitals are making the best use of the situation..

nowadays doctors are more like a businessman.. they will first check if you have insurance, if yes, they will rip you off..
doctors are more like a educated mafia..
medical mafia is the worst thing happened to mankind still we go for allopathic.. I have shifted to ayurvedic and homeopathic now bye bye allopethic...
India have ayurvedic hospitals also.why they did not treat for free.
Why isn't the go nment acting ag inst this day light robbery.
Nothing is for poor and common people. Everything Goverment, Po itics ,policies, are for elite people.
How come hospitals are charging so much for putting people on ventilator and oxygen cylinders? They keep on charging even when patients are so critical that their survival chances are so thin. Why isn't there any cap on the charges? how can everyone afford fees like 10 lakh, 15 lakh etc. Even medicm does not covers so much.
Why is go nment and all other po iticians are silent now?
They are the partner in crime!
Even insurance companies are not honoring their policies. All are fleecing. I was treated for covid had two insurance policies, both was turned down giving reasons such as follow house treatment first then hospitalization if required. How can insurance company say that to policy holders. Are they doctor. In case of severity and death, can they bring dead person back to life. Whole sy em has gone messy.
Mochi/Moti/Mudi/Feku/Vishwaguru/dadhiw/gujju thug dest yed this country single handedly
This situation ests because we don't have enough go nment hospitals and very few of esting ones have good infrastructure. Only solution is to build good go nment hospitals. But go nment busy building statues and central vista.
name and shame the hospital
Every hospital is the same
Public is on the verge of losing control... Dooms Day is not too far..
