India delays exports of Covishield amid Covid surge; Centre allays safety concerns
NEW DELHI: With fresh Covid infections on the rise, India has put a temporary suspension on all major exports of the AstraZeneca-Oxford University vaccine which is being manufactured by the Pune-based Serum Institute, reported Reuters.
According to sources, the move will affect supplies to the GAVI/WHO-backed Covax vaccine-sharing facility through which more than 180 countries, mostly poor, are expected to get doses of the vaccine.
Through Covax, India has so far supplied 17.7 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, known locally as Covishield.
According to the external affairs ministry website, there has been no vaccine export from India since Thursday.
The development comes at a time when India is planning to expand its nationwide immunization drive to include all those above the age of 45 years starting April 1.
The Centre has also asked states to step up the vaccination programme and flagged concerns over slow pace of inoculations in some regions.
"Everything else has taken a backseat, for the time being at least," one of the sources told Reuters.
"No exports, nothing till the time the India situation stabilises. The go nment won't take such a big chance at the moment when so many need to be vaccinated in India."
'Covishield is safe'
Meanwhile, the Centre on Wednesday said there is no signal of concern regarding the Covishield vaccine amid reports about possible side-effects such as blood clotting in some countries.
Good decision. Indians first.
Centre should ensure they prioritize Indian citizens while trying to bnce vaccine exports. Other countries may receive some less stock initially but gt can speed up production.
Vaccines first for India. If required add more production capacity or negotiate export contracts.
Vaccines should first take care of own citizens then foreign people.
Why did you first gift free vaccines to so many countries? Few samples would have been ok.
Hope other countries understand and co operate with us.
Hope nations which are importing Indian vaccines understand the 'shortage' position back in India and cooperate with us.
Good decision and this is exactly need of hour at the current moment for india
No food in house....but donating to neighbors to show off
GAP BETWEEN 1ST DOSE & 2ND DOSE MUST BE MORE THAN 45 DAYS. BODY IMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DEPENDS ON T- CELL, B-CELL EFFICIENCY.
EVEN DRINKERS CAN TAKE THE VACCINES, NOTHING HAPPENS.
EVERYONE SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED TO TAKE WHETHER COVAXIN OR COVISHIED .
What happen to Bharath Covax is still on trial whey they are not used still cannot get data or is it works like water that is why they are not included.Go nment is hiding not revealing the effectiveness of covax.
Indian first and Hindus first.
Shame on the central go nment for gifting these vaccines when our own are deprived of it. Priority should have been to vaccinate max age groups first.
SII took money to supply vaccines to Bangladesh, Saudi and other countries.
Beggars cannot be choosers.
COVID 19 vaccine is still on an experimentation process only - globally --- and its real efficacy & tenacity will be known only after several months.....? Our half-vaccines hurried/harried roll out..... are not even at par with such .......................?
No country wants experimental, clot forming vaccine. They can be tried on dhimmis only.
Very nice. Lets massively expand capacity and production. Rope in all pharma industry. Make for India and World
