In big spike, India adds 20,000+ cases in a day; toll crosses 16,000
NEW DELHI: In the biggest spurt in Covid-19 infections in India, more than 20,000 new cases were reported from across the country on Saturday, nearly 1,500 more than the previous high recorded just a day earlier.
Fresh cases surged to 20,060 on Saturday, just a day after breaching the 18,000 mark for the first time. While Maharashtra reported the highest jump in numbers, recording as many as 6,368 new cases with Mumbai’s count crossing 2,000 for the first time, at least nine other states and Union territories witnessed their highest single-day spurt in infections.
These were Tamil Nadu, with 3,713 cases, Telangana (1,087), Karnataka (918), Andhra Pradesh (796), Gujarat (615), Bihar (301), Kerala (195), Goa (89) and Puducherry (87). Numbers remained high in Delhi, which reported 2,948 fresh cases, Uttar Pradesh (607), Haryana (543) and Bengal (521), among others.
As many as 414 deaths from the virus were reported during the day, taking the overall toll past 16,000, to 16,095. The total Covid-19 cases in India stood at 5,29,533 while active cases crossed the 2-lakh mark even as the number of patients who have recovered rose to nearly 3.1 lakh, as per data collated from state go nments.
Telangana became the fourth state in the country after Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Delhi to register over 1,000 cases in a single day, when as many as 1,087 people tested positive for the virus in the state. The total count of cases now stands at 13,436. In the last 24 hours, six more patients succumbed to the virus taking the death toll to 243.
It is for the first time since the initial days of the pandemic that the number of active cases in Telangana was almost double the number of recovered patients. Telangana currently has 8,265 active cases while 4,928 patients have recovered so far.
Karnataka too reported a record 24-hour spike of 918 Covid-19 cases, with Bengaluru adding its highest number, 596, to the tally, marking a sharp rise over the past week. Bengaluru currently has 2,531 cases, of which 1,913 are under treatment; a majority are from BBMP areas.
Tamil Nadu’s Covid-19 death toll breached the four-digit mark to touch 1,025 with 68 fatalities reported on Saturday. The fatality rate has risen to 1.3% from 0.9% a fortnight ago. The state added 3,713 fresh cases, 1,939 in Chennai, taking the total to 78,335.
Tamil Nadu is the fourth state, after Maharashtra (7,273 deaths), Delhi (2,558) and Gujarat (1,790), to have more than 1,000 fatalities.
A hundred days after the first case was detected in the state, Gujarat recorded its single-day highest tally of 615 Covid-19 positive cases in 24 hours ending 5pm. It’s for the first time that the state’s daily tally has breached the 600 cases mark. Gujarat also recorded 18 deaths for the third day in a row, taking the death toll to 1,790.
The pandemic also surged in Bihar, which recorded 301 new cases, its highest in a day, taking the total tally to 8,979. Two deaths were also reported, raising the toll to 58. With 6,930 recoveries, Bihar’s recovery rate is 20% higher than that of the national average, said state health department secretary Lokesh Kumar Singh.

In Tamilnadu the lockdown period is extended, and people cooperate with all te inconveniences . But the virus is spreading like a wild fire, why it is? Who is at fault is the people or the govt with the support of officials?
