NEW DELHI: The long-pending joint venture between India and Russia to manufacture 200 Kamov-226T light-utility helicopters for around $1 billion (over Rs 6,500 crore) is now finally set to kick off, with Russian Presi nt Vladimir Putin giving the formal approval for the enterprise under the "Make in India" policy.
Defence ministry sources on Wednesday said Russia's "green signal" for the "activation" of the JV between defence PSU Hindustan Aeronautics and Russian companies has now being received by India.
This much-delayed project for the light utility helicopters is considered crucial because India's endeavour to buy 197 such choppers from abroad has been scrapped three times over the last decade due to co ption allegations and technical deviations.
Good positive development
Cheeta/Chetak coud fly high altitude up to Siachin Glacier. Can this one do that? why not upgrade Cheeta/Chetak? Why buy the Russian Helos? Unless Cheeta/Chetak had major problems.
India thanks Putin.
It is advised Modi Gt to have a good relation with Russia like we have with USA and see that relation developed all time.Russia is a reliable and sincere friend since independence particularly after 1971 war with Pakistan. our Non Alliance is the best policy that adopted by late Pandit Neharu ex PM.
Surprised to know that we can go to Mars but can not build a helicopter . Is this a paradox or some thing fishy due to arms import lobbies , disgruntled po iticians who survive on cick backs and their babus in ministers ?
