Jet Airways pilot made ‘blind’ landing in Kerala
NEW DELHI: A Jet Airways aircraft made a ‘blind’ landing in Kerala last August in an unprecedented seventh attempt after running dangerously low on fuel due to the six previous failed landing attempts. The extremely bad weather pushed the pilot to take this decision. The DGCA had conducted an inquiry into this case of August 17, 2015, and the report has brought out some chilling facts.
The Boeing 737 on its way from Doha to Kochi had six failed landing attempts — a first ever for aviation — and made it only in the seventh try in Thiruvananthapuram when it was just running out of fuel. This, the DGCA report given to the government says, could have had “disastrous consequences”. “Do you know where it (runway) is?” the cockpit voice recorder quotes the first officer as asking the commander, and the reply is: “Just going blindly.”
The pilots had no option but to land as the B-737 had very little fuel, 349 kg to be precise the DGCA has found, as there was no fuel left for another landing attempt. When the aircraft was approaching Kochi for landing in the first time, it had 4,844 kg fuel.
The heading is misleading. What else the Pilot can do? He has to land rather than crash and kill all the passengers. Thank God all passengers were saved.
If conditions were unfavourable for landing he should have headed for an alternate option. What he had done was very wrong and dangerous.
It could had repeated the incident of United Airlines Flight 173.
Kerala has so many airports. Was there any fuel to land in any of them, or Bangalore? I don”t know the distance nor the fuel consumption. Anyway the passengers were saved due to the divine power of Modiji.
R K Sharma,
The AAI should be hauled up for the runways being not upgraded to facilitate instrument landings
At least it was brave on the part of the pilots to land.. When they had no choice..
TERRIBLE TO EVEN READ ABOUT IT..

Shocking in the extreme. This was an international flight and it is only God”s grace that prevented it from crashing with horrendous consequences. The question is why was this flight in such a predicament? Did no one do a weather check?

At Least the pilot should have informed the ATC, who would have made all preparations for Crash landing.

Why did the flight not land at another airport. As far as I understand you don”t make more than two attempts to land at the same airport. It is just foolish

The Pilots had no choice due to bad weather. they used all their available attempts to make a best landing. Can’t blame them as it is the weather. Should be recommended for bravery award for saving all lives

just revoke this pilot”s license. he should have diverted plane.this guy is a total loser.

6 failed landing in the same airport. the Capt could have diverted to another airport after the second failed attempt. This was cutting it too close.
