GENEVA: India lost its appeal at the World Trade Organization in a dispute over solar power on Friday, failing to overturn a US complaint+ that New Delhi had discriminated against importers in the Indian solar power sector.
The WTO's appeals judges upheld an earlier ruling that found India had broken WTO rules by requiring solar power developers to use Indian-made cells and modules. The appeal ruling is final and India will be expected to bring its laws into compliance with the WTO rules.
"This report is a clear victory for American solar manufacturers and workers, and another step forward in the fight against climate change," US trade representative Michael Froman said in a statement.
Indian officials made no immediate comment on the appeal outcome.
It is not unusual to see a world body taking a decision in favour of the United States. The US lobby is very forceful as far as business interests are concerned.
I believe India should collaborate with China in producing state-of-the-art solar cells and install only the best wherever and whenever needed
Well then, India should not have signed WTO. India gets a lot of advantage by exporting its own maufacture under WTO.
Why our leaders, particularly Modiji, not understand the US game plan? WTO is curse for India.
Please ask this question to Modiji. He doesn''t understand many thing.
Ban only obsolete technology cells and allow state of technology. prevent dumping by US.
Unfair and immature to cry discrimination in this case. As a signatory of WTO, India should know the rules. Don''t like the rules? Don''t be a signatory. You cant have the cake and eat it too!
Why ban it? Just tax it and use the money to give tax rebate to indian manufacturers.
US exports have gone down not because of India''s domestic content requirement, but due to availability of cheap solar modules in China & Taiwan. India needs to become more competitive with focus on R&D in solar technologies & manufacturing.
