NEW DELHI: India's first new conventional submarine in 16 years finally began its sea trials off Mumbai on Sunday, giving much-needed fillip to the Navy, which is battling to retain its underwater combat edge over Pakistan, even while being confronted with submarines pop up all over the Indian Ocean.
But the diesel-ric Scorpene submarine —to be commissioned as INS Kalvari (tiger shark) by 2016-end — is like an underwater predator without teeth, a gun without bullets, as of now. The induction of its "primary wons", heavyweight torpedoes, remains enmeshed in the still-exploding VIP helicopter scam.
good initiative but indians won't be able to maintain it though
Congress has always diluted India's security requirements. Maybe it had other 'priorities'
16 years is very long time
Congress loed India for ages. Mr. Modi India will always remember you for your good deeds.
Japan developed a new sub with Australia fairly committed as the first customer. Australia reneged and went with France. Seems an opportune time for India to go shop for India if Japan will deal (think they might still have a big about India's nukes).
Good to see submarine going to be part of INdian Navy
Ten years of UPA rule has left the Indian Armed Forces with lots of missing teeth
We must have enough strength, but unfortunately we have to spend on wons, due to our betrayar neighbors.....
Its a proud moment for the nation....
Its great......congratulations India....
Looks like a rusted bath tub
If India gets defeated in another war, blame it on the po iticians and army honchos who delayed the security by receiving kickbacks.
