外文标题：DTC gets its first woman bus driver
NEW DELHI: Marking a step towards women empowerment, Vankadarath Saritha on Friday joined as the first woman bus driver of the Delhi Transport Corporation. Introducing her, the Delhi transport and rural development minister Gopal Rai called it a new beginning and said the department would appreciate if more women come forward to accept the challenge.
The 30-year-old driver, from Nalgonda in Telangana, has been posted at the Sarojini Nagar depot and will start working officially from April 20. “After four weeks of training, I am really excited to start my work from Monday. Initially, I have been given day shift. It will be a challenge as the reputation of drivers isn’t so good, but I would follow all the rules and especially keep women safety in mind,” Saritha said.
Saritha, who comes from a financially weak background, said this government job means a lot to her and it would make it easier for her to support her family. “My father works as a farmer. We are five sisters and I am the youngest. All my elder sisters are married. One of my sisters is also a driver with Meru Cabs. I want to give a message to the women in our society that no job is meant only for men. Women can do anything if they value their potential,” she said.
Saritha started her career as an autorickshaw driver and has worked as a bus driver earlier in Hyderabad too. Before getting selected for the DTC, she was working as a taxi driver in Delhi.
