外文标题：U.S., Chinese warships narrowly avoid collision in South China Sea
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. guided missile cruiser operating in international waters in the South China Sea was forced to take evasive action last week to avoid a collision with a Chinese navy ship maneuvering nearby, the U.S. Pacific Fleet said in a statement on Friday.
The incident on December 5 involving the USS Cowpens came at a time of heightened tensions between the United States and China following Beijing's declaration of an Air Defense Identification Zone in the East China Sea.
The Pacific Fleet statement did not offer details about what led to the near-collision. But it did say the incident underscored the need for the "highest standards of professional seamanship, including communications between vessels, to mitigate the risk of an unintended incident or mishap."
Beijing declared the air defense zone over the East China Sea late last month and demanded that aircraft flying through the area provide it with flight plans and other information.
China will soon be swallowed by its own greed and arrogance.
They are just making to many enemies... South Korea, Japan, ASEAN, India, Bhutan,
They think their huge army gave them the right to antagonize their neighbors.
huge army ... a couple of ICBMs can fix that!
A new Cold War...stuff like this probably happens on a daily basis we just never hear about it.
Sounds like the old game of Chicken of the Sea that we played with the Russians years ago
I was a young sailor then when similar scenarios were conducted in Mediterranean Sea with the Russian Fleet and Trawlers.
Beijing's declaration of its Air Defense Zone over the East China Sea is almost a thin RED LINE not to be crossed by the US Fleet. This said, such declaration violated by the USA increases the chances if both sides could take steps that if believes are safe but turns out to be undetectable provocation, it would be construed as provocative error thereby results to violent armed conflict. I say violent conflict because these two Commanding Officers will take the first value presented and will act accordingly with or without higher echelon's permission
Unfortunately, the Chinese have the money and manufacturing capability right now to quickly repair and redeploy and ship damaged in these games of chicken, whereas the US does not. So the US will often be the first to blink now.
...the Chinese also have the raw numbers to replace any wounded or killed from collisions, the "national pride" to get many of their citizens to blindly follow them, and totalitarian ability to "remove" (read: kill) any who openly criticize them.
...it's a tough nut to crack.
I don't know who your talking to but we have the money and capability to make more as well. And I would not think twice about sinking a Chinese ship. International waters is International waters they hit us I would shoot and sink there ship we have 100's more ships they don't wanna navy war they cant win
After the Korean war, the US dare not fight with the Chinese again. This is the main reason why US limited the Vietnam War to South Vietnam and never invaded the North. Result - US lost Vietnam to Vietcong. This is a fact.
In the seventies I served aboard a sub that was just converted to Poseidon missile. We were on our way back in after firing one on Cape Kennedy's test range, on surface, when some Russian trawlers, that had been observing slowed and stopped in front of us, the captain came up and saw what was going on, then called down to control center to increase speed to flank, which is, look out Jack we're coming through, needless to say, they moved
US ship is trying to find out how far we could push the Chinese. Now we know. The Chinese will run their warships directly to USS Washington sometime in the near future in return.
Uh oh they deployed their only aircraft carrier! China means business.
And it's a rehabbed Russian old junker
I am surprised this is not getting more attention in the media.
It's not that big a deal. Happened all the time during the cold war.
DiegoV, first of all, why don't you turn in your Green Card and get the hell out of my country, I can cut my own lawn, then you can watch as, MY Tax Dollars, drop a million pounds of Bombs on those Idiots we have left over from the past 3 Wars. 1 million Communist Soldiers gone in a second, Big deal.
Why didn't they just sink it. It was clearly threatening them.
Sooner or later there will be an incident, accident or not.
Obviously, it is purposely done by China to intimidate the Lone Superpower in the Blue Waters of the Pacific.
Let us play then by the rules they set, in order for them to learn from their obvious reckless mistake.
Call up a few small decommissioned (old) Navy ships (which can be used on Blue Water), then packed them up with TNT, and allow these floating Mines to sail on the perimeter of a sailing fleet, and go near a Chinese Naval Fleet (In International Water, where China Claimed its own).
And when the Chinese does the same thing again, allow the collision to occur (Make sure everything is properly recorded) and let the Chinese Navy have a taste of their own medicine.
After all, we never rammed their ships. They rammed ours.....
Does China have the same 1st strike nuclear policy Russia revealed recently? even if its only conventional attack or immanent threat ?
No. China's policy is only returning (nuclear) fire after being fired upon by nuclear weapons
Don't kid yourself. Not only do the Chinese not like the Japanese for WWII atrocities but they don't like the Americans for killing 200,000 Chinese soldiers during the Korean conflict.
Only 200,000? Hell, I thought we killed more than that.
We never stepped foot in china. Those backstabbing #$%$ ran across the border into Korea as a surprise and killed 50,000 American soldiers. We saved your commie butts in ww2 and this is how we're repaid
since when usa become so coward and start behaving like japanese?
complaining to the press about threat, bullying ?
With all of the technology these ships have, this shouldn't happen. Tell us the real story
Time to bring the battleships back. They don't take evasive action for anything else on the water.
Probably the only thing their carrier is good for is ramming smaller vessels.
