外文标题：U.S. universities see record number of foreign students, many from China
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - More than 800,000 international students studied at U.S. colleges and universities last year, a record high fueled largely by an influx of young scholars from China, U.S. data released on Monday showed.
That is a 7 percent increase - or 55,000 students - from the 2011 academic year, according to annual findings from the Institute of International Education and the U.S. Department of State's annual "Open Doors" report.
Much of the growth was driven by undergraduates from China, which already sends the most students to the United States, officials said. The number of students from Saudi Arabia also grew.
"Both total enrollment and new enrollment had slowed after the economic slowdown in 2007/08, and both have now rebounded to previous high rates of growth," the report said, highlighting the impact of the recent U.S. recession that officially ran from 2007 to 2009, but has still left an impact.
Foreign students can help add some $24 billion to the U.S. economy either through tuition dollars or more long-term through research, business connections or other endeavors, officials said.
Overall, international students make up less than 4 percent of the 21 million attending U.S. colleges and universities, they added.
Chinese college student enrollment overall for the 2012-2013 school year increased 21 percent to almost 235,000 students, including a 26 percent jump in the number of undergraduates, the data showed.
"Students from the top three places of origin - China, India and South Korea - now represent 49 percent of the total number of international students in the United States, with the number from China increasing, and the numbers from India and South Korea declining," the report said.
Other countries also saw a surge in students seeking to study in the United States.
Let me get that right: China is perfecting the skills of their spys in the USA and the Muslims from Saudi-arabia are welcome also?? How about getting the US people educated ??
Good for China , Bad for USA.... while more and more Chinese students learn English, learn about America and American life. yet we stay ignorant about China and cannot speak the Chinese language. who will be in the advantage in the future???
All resources in the USA should go first to the citizens. If any remains then share them. This includes education too.
These foreign students paid premium for the resources; in fact, their tuition which is 4 to 5 times the amount the instate students pay, subsidizes the instate students' tuition. Without these, the instate students should pay much higher.
In China, there is one big exam that can determine the rest of your life – national higher education entrance examination. It is fair to everybody. If you can’t get good scores, you can’t get into good schools. In the US, if you are rich and you pay the international tuition, you can get good education. That’s why rich families send their kids to the US. The kids coming the US are not the smartest, but they are richest group.
A University is a business and like all business they need customers. These professors have to find new money and that new money is in China. So thank these Chinese students for bringing new money to this country they are helping our economy. They buy computers, rent apartments buy cars, travel, and eat food in this country. They also pay local and state sales tax and help pay for the university with their school tuition . ;
Chinese women have also found out how easy it is for their children to become American citizens. With birthright citizenship, all they have to know is their due date. It's actually become a business.
if a chinese student get pregenant this is a violation of their student visa and must return home with shame
I'm referring to the ones who come specifically to give birth in the U.S. to take advantage of birthright citizenship, not the ones here on a student visa.
Selling higher education surely helps American economy. Foreign students pay tuition and spend money locally for all sorts of services and necessities. More importantly, American students get the chance to study together and compete with talents from around the world. That experience is priceless, and unlike foreign students we don't have to pay out-of-state tuition to be immersed in a multicultural, diverse campus.
There are pluses and minuses. The best will get job offers from companies in the US. We are brain draining China (and many other developing countries). Most foreign students pay full fees/tuition, so they are in effect subsidizing others that do not. There may be US students of limited abilities that are not admitted because of these foreign students.
This country's population has dumbed down over the years so schools have to go elsewhere to recruit talent.
Time to tax universities as any other businesses.
Our Universities are not our anymore. They are sold to those that pay more. It is an Industry that sells our knowledge. Why don’t they open up universities in those countries and leave our research private? How many of our researchers are US nationals? Do they stay forever or take our knowledge with them? Another step toward our decline.
China graduates more that 300k engineers yearly, the US? Maybe 50k.
Are we that blind? Yes we are.
I agree that this is a serious problem but to be honest at least half of the Chinese engineers are of rather low ability and probably wouldn't be considered full engineers in the rest of the world.
My guess is 99% of the Chinese students are going to study engineering, medicine, physicas, etc. While the American students all pursue Liberal Arts degrees.
I guarantee that most will stay and take jobs from Americans. I am a job developer for veterans and I see it everyday!
And its our politicians and money minded policy makers who let it happen
U.S. students can't afford the tuition.
There once was a time that the leading group of foreign students in US colleges and universities were Japanese Students. That was right before 1941. HUMMMM!!!
Maybe we should give the Chinese free tuition as a way to start paying off our debt
Good. Let's get their most-ambitious, best and brightest over here. More than likely, they will like the US and probably stay. Now we have more smart and driven people here to help improve our nation.
Republican America don't like immigrants.
Chinese are here to learn and steal technologies to make better bombs and planes for our enemies. These students could be part of Chinese armies. We never know what they're up to don't we.
I wonder how many of those students get subsidies from the US?
All of the Chinese students are spies!!! Plus, why are we educating our competitors?
They are student and not spies. Their tuition money create jobs!
Who else can afford college except Chinese and Saudis?
train them to out compete the US
A least those Chinese won't go to school to learn how to fly planes into buildings like some people from stinkhole countries we know!!!
Chinese students whose parents have $$$$$$.

China wins. Just lay down and die.
