外文标题：US criticizes new China zone, vows to defend Japan
Geneva (AFP) – The United States said Saturday it was “deeply concerned” and committed to defending Japan after China announced an air zone in the East China Sea that includes disputed islands.
In a move that US ally Japan branded as “very dangerous,” China said it was setting up the “air defense identification zone” over the islands administered by Tokyo to “guard against potential air threats.”
In similar statements, Secretary of State John Kerry and Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel said that the United States was “deeply concerned” about the moves by China, which also scrambled air force jets to carry out a patrol mission in the newly declared zone.
“This unilateral action constitutes an attempt to change the status quo in the East China Sea,” Kerry said.
“Escalatory action will only increase tensions in the region and create risks of an incident,” the top US diplomat said from Geneva, where he was taking part in talks on reaching an agreement with Iran on its nuclear program.
Kerry said that the United States has urged China to “exercise caution and restraint,” and warned Beijing against implementing its new zone.
“We urge China not to implement its threat to take action against aircraft that do not identify themselves or obey orders from Beijing,” Kerry said.
Hagel reiterated that the Japanese-administered Senkaku islands — which the Chinese claim and call the Diaoyu — fell under the US-Japan security treaty, meaning that Washington would defend its ally Tokyo if the area is attacked.
Tell them to back off or we will file bankruptcy.
Good idea. Maybe Barack will then have a future in a sweatshop making clothes for Wal Mart.
Kerry will huff and puff and then give China everything they want!
The issue is if the US does not know whom the island belongs, why does it want to defend one party against another?
The US should commence daily overflights of the Senkaku Islands. If the Chinese retaliate, the US cancels our debt to China.
Good reason to default on debt , but will bring a balck mark to American capabilities and financial strength or lack ther off.
China is power hungry. The question is whether or not this island is worth starting WW III over.
ummm so we give them this one island….then they get more brave and take over Taiwan….then a few other islands around the area, etc, etc,…….you know the old saying “give them an inch and they’ll take a mile”…..just like little kids, the big powers do the same thing…..AND the United States has been the only power to chastise these kids….maybe we’re not always right in our actions but our actions are a helluva lot better than no action at all!
This argument that Japan was once our enemy while we never went to war with China makes no sense. With this logic we should always look at England as our enemy, because after all we fought more wars with them than anyone else.
Also, stop with this argument that China never killed or wounded American soldiers. Did anyone ever hear of the Korean War? This war was all but over in the favor of the free war when Communist China decided to enter the war on the side of North Korea. They not only pushed the allied troops (mainly Americans) back to the South Korean border, but in the process killed, wounded, and tortured American soldiers.
Why did we fight thousands miles away in Korea and Vietnam?
How many our people bee killed and how many were killed for what?
These are islands that no one has seen fit to occupy permanently. I say everything leave them alone to the birds.

The US has clearly and firmly declared its stance on this issue. It stands with Japan and will fight against China in the nightmare scenario that this conflict escalates to armed conflict. Furthermore, the US is the largest economy in the world, China is the second largest economy in the world, and Japan is the third largest economy in the world. A war between these 3 nations would drag this world into an economic depression, the likes of which would make the crash of Lehman brothers appear as insignificant.
Why do so many comments invite escalation? If war breaks out everyone loses.
Master Of Reality
The Japanese better start pumping out babies or they won’t even have enough soldiers to defend themselves in a future conflict. China practically has every strategic advantage over them – resources, man power. The only thing Japan has going for it is the fact that China’s navy would have trouble landing ground troops and storming the coasts.
Kill-A-Commie For Mommy
Yes, but the Chinese don’t have the fighting spirit of the samurai, that is lying just below the surface of Japanese society. It is do-or-die for Japan and they need to rise to the challenge.
Japan is far more dangerous then you think. The Chinese military is virtually worthless because they are stuck as you have said. Japan on the other hand has one hell of a navy. It is actually more powerful than ours boat for boat. We just have a hell of alot more boats.
China is doing the same aggression in the South China Sea against the Philippines, Vietnam and other countries. These smaller countries cannot defend themselves against the Chinese behemoth. Japan and the USA are the hope for Asia.
and plans to shift the majority of US warships to the Asia-Pacific region by 2020. So that means China has 7 years to take over the disputed islands, good going Obama, let our enemies know they have nothing to fear from us
No, not 7 years. Time is on China’s side. 7 years later, China is stronger.
Japan should move a number of people there from the radiant areas?
over here in this line
We should send Kerry over there. He could buy the islands and give them to China…. Hahhahhaaa.
The US and Japan have expanded the No Debt Pay Zone. If China enters the named “air defense identification zone” all debts public and private owed to China are void.
China owns so much of our debt, a little military action can be dealt with by calling in the debt and crippling the US economy. Or they can simply quit loaning us more money. And then there’s the cyberwar they’re most likely ahead of us in. They may not innovate, but they copy well and they’ve been spying us since the 50’s.
A miscalculation by the Chinese communists? They probably want to distract attention from an internal issue.
I guess with Afghanistan winding down the US needs another war to get into?
I feel another World War brewing…
Avery. I Pity The Victims Of Agent Orange
So be it! Let the nukes fly towards Japan and if the US wants to join in, well, the more the merrier!
