Price Of Unity
Narendra Modi's ambitious plan to build the world's tallest statue, a 392-foot sardar patel made of steel and reinforced concrete, is expected to cost 2063 crore.
Here are some alternative uses for the same amount of money.
"Statue of Unity" = 2063 crore
*443 crore mid-day meals.
*48 Lakh school students' education for a year.
*41,26,000 public toilets
*6876 km of rural roads
*25 multi-speciality hospitals
＊4.65 per meal = 443 crore meals

Silly articles like this should not be published. Sardar Patel is a hero and needs to be remembered and is so far deliberately sidelined by Congress.
Never expected Newslaundry to publish so low level article.
If Jesus, or Prophet or Ram were alive they would be ashamed of lies spread through religions. People just need to think with their conscience, if Sardar was alive would he allow such extravagance.
It seems News Laundry is not getting good writers or Madhu Trehan does not have keen interest in News Laundry any more...
I am sure that the kid who wrote this article has not gone through the project report and all the people who are offended by the Statue of Unity has not seen it either. If they would have seen it, they would understand the rationale behind this project....
Madhu this kid needs a lot of lesson.....just cool graphics will not make him an intellect...
Another Bengali communist in the Newslaundry team! We never can have enough of them till we actually erase the Nehruvian communist construct out of the collective memory and make people conscious about the true nationalist hero Sardar.
Oh dear! After every brilliant Anand Ranganathan article, NewsLaundry seems to have an irrepressible urge to shove a nonsensical piece onto its readers that smacks of looney-leftist agenda. Let us stop all projects because looney leftists are unable to see direct benefits in their myopic world view.
Sounds very similar to idiots who were criticizing India for launching Mangalyaan because millions still live in utmost poverty. Let us put creativity and scientific advancement in deep freeze until the hard problems of poverty, illiteracy, corruption, terrorism, disease, sanitation and infrastructure are not solved. The problem with India was never that we had not enough money to solve these problems -- they won't go away even if you throw an infinite sum of money at them.
I can only see the following 3 things in the vision of this project: development, development, development
ANGRY NL FAN
Is your organizations working with retards......very low level article.......ask this confused guy to resign or fire him....kuch bhi nahi chalega NL....what do u think that who is reading these type of articles are fools.....get a check NL...I regret paying for subscription..
If Americans think like this they wouldn't have the Statue of Liberty....
This idea is not even ridiculous, how can you compare development with midday meals or public toilet...
The 2500 crores total budget is to build a high-tech museum, chronicling 90 years history of India’s freedom fighters (1857-1947), a research and academic centre for preserving the unity and integrity of India, its rich culture and heritage, for research on agriculture which was dear to Sardar, for research on tribal life..........
I do want to ask, is it really possible to produce a meal which costs Rs.4.65/person? Or, is it even possible to build a toilet which costs just Rs. 5000/unit? Did you verify the financial practicality of your own alternative despite the fact that your sources are The Hindu and PIB? Although I do not support the statue, your figures seem misleading. Visvak and Madhu please clarify.
The bottom line is that 2063 Cr. could have been used to set up an actual media watchdog and spare us this bullshit called newslaundry. You AAP stooges are pure commies and should be jailed for this slander against national heroes.
Do you ever tell a rich person how he should spend his money ? Gujarat is a developed state, far better than other states will ever dream of. He can spend the money whatever way he wants. Was USA asked the same question by its people, when it erected the statue of liberty. Guess we will have to agree to disagree
Pity on you Mr. Viswak Sen. Don't consider this reaction as an outrage by a MODI SUPPORTER.
Visvak please stop writing.......kripa kar do....you have your own point of view which you wanna put on us......I live in gujrat....I know what the hell you have wrote.....That is the problem that even if some1 is trying to do something you have the full right to divert the whole story....I hope your boss never gives you any article in future....I will never go through this website again......NL show some balls.
Its perfectly reasonable to question any public expense. But why the cheap & loud graphics? This seemed more like a college pamphlet. And lastly if the graphics were done by Himanshu, what was the contribution of the author (besides googling). Overall i would rate it as unworthy of NL. More importantly, how did it make it past the editor's review?
Can you also list down the money already spent on these schemes, I'm sure it will be much more than what you are writing, the problem is not the money but the execution of the things which we need to correct, some things are done for significnace purposes, for example ISRO mars mission what do you think India is to obtain from that mission, but it is necessary to show your capabilities to the world.
