Days after a team from Tesla visited India, the company’s founder and CEO Elon Musk has indicated that India is on the electric car manufacturer’s radar to set up a new factory.

特斯拉团队访问印度后数日,该公司创始人兼首席执行官埃隆•马斯克表示,有望在印度投建一家电动汽车工厂。

In an interview to the Wall Street Journal, Musk said that the electric carmaker will pick a fresh location for a new factory by the close of this year, and added that India could be an interesting proposition for such an expansion.

在接受《华尔街日报》采访时,马斯克表示,特斯拉新工厂的选址将在今年年底前敲定,并补充说,印度也是一个不错的选择。

Asked which would be the most exciting country to build a Tesla plant right now, Musk said, “We did make an announcement that Mexco would be our next location outside the US. We’ll probably pick another location towards the end of this year.”

On whether India will be an “interesting” contender for this move, he said, “Absolutely.”

当被问及特斯拉新工厂目前最有可能花落谁家时,马斯克说:”我们之前曾宣布过,墨西哥将是特斯拉在美国境外的下一站。我们可能会在今年年底之前另外再选定一个地点。”

在谈到印度是否有望成为竞争者时,他表示”那是自然。”

Musk’s words, even while being non-committal on India, set off speculations that the electric carmaker may finally be looking at the country seriously, especially as he has previously expressed his desire to launch his cars here even while complaining of “challenges” and high import duty in doing so.

马斯克虽然并未对印度做出承诺,但还是引发了人们的猜测。人们认为特斯拉有可能认真考虑印度,马斯克此前就曾表示希望在印度推出特斯拉,不过他也抱怨这个想法还面临着不少”挑战”,进口税也很高。

Last week, minister of state for IT & electronics Rajeev Chandrasekhar told TOI that executives from Tesla’s headquarters had a meeting with certain wings of the government where they were encouraged to consider investments here.

上周,IT和电子部长拉吉夫·钱德拉塞卡告诉《印度时报》,特斯拉总部的高管与印度某些部门举行了一次会议,印度欢迎特斯拉来印度投资。

The company had been pitching for concessions on import duty for introducing its cars in the country directly, but the government refused to play ball, giving the examples of others such as Mercedes-Benz, Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra which are making greens locally.

Currently, India imposes 100% duty on import of completely-built cars with CIF (cost, insurance and freight) value more than $40,000 and 60% on those costing less than the amount.

特斯拉一直在争取进口关税方面的优惠,但印度政府并未松口,还搬出了梅赛德斯-奔驰、塔塔汽车和马恒达等公司的例子,这些公司也在印度进行环保汽车的生产。

If Tesla does not come in now and some Japanese or Korean or Indian manufacturer gets that breathing space to establish and monopolise the EV market, then it will be the same story that happened to European and American carmakers in the 80s and scorned at the Indian market,while Suzuki utilized the space to create Maruti and now has more than 50 percent share of the conventional car market. It is already tiptoeing into the EV market (while Toyota is still dithering).

China is stealing Tesla tech to make its own EV cars and selling them in bigger numbers than the original. The same with all major OEMs. And yet these companies want to set up shop in China. It's almost as if they don't care if the tech is stolen.
