There is no reason why you can’t, but it’ll be extremely difficult. First of all it’ll be difficult for a foreigner to be fluent in Chinese to begin with. And fluent in Chinese in general is one thing, fluent in Chinese with medical terms is another. Most native Chinese aren’t “fluent” with Chinese medical terms. Secondly MD is a lengthy and very challenging procedure. Thirdly working in a Chinese hospital is rater stressful. Junior doctors often have to work in shifts and on call 24/7. Worklife as a doctor in China is completely different from that in, for example, the US or the UK. There are no GP/Referral systems in China so if you work in a big hospital in a big city you’d probably have to see hundreds of patients every single working day as they rush through the door.

It’s not an easy job, not even for native Chinese. Would be 100X harder for a foreigner.

If you’ve already acquired an accredited medical degree in China then your next steps are as follows:

It’s crucial you obtain a 1 Year training placement/internship. If you’re unsure how, then your university should help you with this.

Apply, complete and pass the Medical Licensing Examination. Registration for this is typically between February and March of each year. The examination is quite extensive and it covers a practical skills test, a written test, topics ranging from immunology, pharmacology, psychology, sanitation, ethics, preventative care, reproductive systems and a range of diseases etc

If you fail this test and want to apply again, you must do your training/internship at another institute

It would be beneficial that your Chinese is to native level; making mistakes in such a setting can prove fatal. However, there are some international/private hospital which seek English speaking doctors.

We hope this has helped you and good luck!

I do not see why not, given that they fulfil all the required documentation to be employed and reside in China.

Avoiding a long winded answer, if they’re proficient enough in Chinese to have gone through med school in China, then there shouldn’t be an barriers to employment after graduation unless there was either an underlying racial issue on the employer’s side that would hinder their employment chances.

Of course they can. the biggest difficult might be language barrier, visa and the certificate of being a doctor, plus homesickness. The rest will be easy.

There are private clinics, and VIP areas in some hospitals, where foreign doctors can get jobs in China. I don’t know how difficult it is, but assume the standards would be quite high…I’d suspect that they’d want some degree of experience, but no idea what that would be.

Your best bet to get clear info on this would be to contact one of the international health units in China. I’d suggest checking out “International SOS” and “Beiing United Family Hospital”.

Many foreign students, especially from the Sub-continent, study medicine in China. Sadly their degrees are neither recognized in China nor their home country as they do not get much access to Chinese hospitals during the course. They learn Mandarin but are taught in English so their Chinese is usually not great. The only opportunity they have is to return home and sit for exams put on by Western countries seeking doctors to work in their free hospitals and as GP’s. I believe they are a very good source of cheap doctors. I speak only from what I know of a huge cohort (circa 500) who were studying in Suzhou.

I'm not qualified to answer, but I still want to add my thought.

Its not that hard to fluent in Chinese as we can see a lot of foreigners speaking Mandarin or any Chinese ascent fluently today. Get a uni entrance for bachelor degree requires gaokao results and Chinese uni do not welcome older people passed teens. But doctor, I don't know. For medical schools, from what I hear from my classmates, you need 7 years to graduate from school and at least 3 years of practitioner and then, you are a doctor in your profession.

To Chinese, practitioner or even medical students are treat like doctors. Dentists are also doctors. Anyone solve disease are doctors.

To sum up:

It's easier than USA or Australia, but still very difficult.

You cannot use your Chinese medic certificate to any other country as a doctor.

You need to get rid of Chinese language barrier.

A2A:

Can foreigners fluent in Chinese and have earned an MD (doctorate) degree in China work in a Chinese hospital after graduation? If so, will it be difficult?

I think it is possible, though the process etc. might be quite troublesome as the foreigner need apply for working visa.

You'll have great difficulties:

1, you don't have resources in China, good hospital are usually public hospitals.

2, your patients will be mainly Chinese, is your Mandarin good enough to understand different accents of it ?

But you can open a clinic in China aiming at foreigners, foreigners normally trust foreigners more, and some rich Chinese will also visit you.If you are a dentist, that's even better!

There are so many kinds of Chinese medicine. A foreigner who learns Chinese medicine in China will be still very difficult to work in China's hospitals. Many Chinese students find it very hard to remember the names of Chinese traditional medicine. How can a foreigner remember them? I think Chinese medicine must be the most difficult and complicated subject in the world.

How can a Non-Chinese become a Doctor in China?

Education is highly valued in Chinese culture. So you’ll need to get this in order. Also, China recently instituted a rule that you need a Bachelors degree at the minimum, to work here, I think.

You should also be prepared to learn the language. But given it’s medicine, that can be a monumental challenge. So your best chance would probably be to get educated, whether here or elsewhere and then apply for a job at a private practice wherein English is spoken - these places do exst and serve as a welcome thing for the foreigners who don’t want to visit non-English speaking hospitals or clinics.

What are the pros and cons of studying medical in China?

Pros:-

5-year course.

Good infrastructure, study, and hospital tie-ups.

Cost effective.

If you do your internship in China it will be valid in India.

Con:-

A limited number of seats in each university. You might not get admission to your chosen university.

The issuance of JW-202 (Invitation letter) takes a lot of time. And even after waiting for months it might not be issued.

Only 45 universities provide medical studies in English language and 214 universities in bilingual. If you choose a bilingual university then you have to study in the Chinese language after your second year which is very difficult to cope up with.

I’m planning to study medicine in China and I’ve seen some comments that China is not the best direction to study medicines. Can you give me more info?

I am not a doctor, but I have lived in China and been to Chinese hospitals many times. The first thing to know about China is that the trust in Chinese/Western medicine is about 50/50. For most non-lethal things, the majority of (especially older) Chinese people will go get traditional Chinese medicine before turning to western medicine, or at the very least, they will use both at the same time. There are a lot of beliefs in China about temperature impacting your health (ex: your acne is caused by too much heat, whether that means you ate too much beef or drank too much alcohol, etc.). So, this is something you are going to have to be aware of if you are going to be treating Chinese people.

Another thing to keep in mind is that most Chinese hospitals are not as clean, private, or organized as they are in the US. Healthcare is much cheaper, and the population is much higher, so the standards aren’t quite the same.
