Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first stage of the Delhi-Mumbai expressway on February 12, 2023. The 1,386km (861 miles) route is the country’s longest expressway, and will cut travel time between the two major cities in half, to about 12 hours. The US$13 billion project is part of New Delhi’s infrastructure push to catch up with geopolitical rival China.

Kind of shocking to learn india doesn't have roads linking their two biggest cities. In the US, there's highway 66 linking Chicago to Los Angeles that runs 2448 miles compared to india's expressway of 861 and China has highways and rails linking all their major cities across the country.

This is not to compete with China. China has better infrastructure that everyone in India knows. This is to build world class road and rail infrastructure in the country. First high speed line with shinkansen technology is also under construction.
