NASA chief says China could claim the moon as its own territory. Who do you think is more likely to do that, China or the US?

Mark Shulmann·

The important point here is that nobody can claim any astronomical body. If China or any other country tried to claim the moon, nobody is going to pay any attention to the claim.

The other important point is that the job of the NASA Administrator (currently Bill Nelson) is to implement the U.S. space program as determined by Congress. He does not get to decide U.S. foreign policy, and he doesn’t get to decide what foreign powers have claims to which astronomical bodies. If any nation made a claim on the moon, everyone in the U.S. government would ignore that claim and would expect the NASA Administrator to continue with the current U.S. lunar program.

I think neither the US nor the Chinese are stupid enough to try that. Russia, on the other hand…

That’s a good question!! It is just my opinion, but if some of the potential values come through, I’m sure every country will want it’s piece. Many, like the U.S., will put on a bold front of ‘sharing’ it, like the Antarctic, while more covertly aiming to be set up and secure some of the ‘better parts’. Others like China might be more likely to try and publicly lay ‘claim’ directly (assuming their ahead in setting up bases). I doubt anyone will ever seriously concede the entire lunar surface to just one country though.

Typical USA thinking, thing is China has never claimed anything, other than what is hystoricly theirs, and I doubt very much that the moon is part of that, if they set up a moon base then yes that would be theirs but the whole moon? Nope, never happen, just another bit of yankee propaganda.

Is it true what the director of the space agency (NASA) says that China intends to seize the Moon?

No, as with virtually every question on this site that begins with the phrase “is it true" that is not only false but ridiculously false.

No one can claim a celestial body according to an international treaty. No one who said they owned one would be acknowledged.

Can you cite where a NASA administrator says this? I can find numerous articles that say that he said; “And it is true that we better watch out that they don’t get to a place on the moon under the guise of scientific research. And it is not beyond the realm of possibility that they say, ‘Keep out, we’re here, this is our territory.’”, but I can’t find any actual recording of this.

If two competing nations both lay claim to the same patch of lunar surface, then in the end it will be decided simply by who can develop this claim first with hardware, simple as that.

He is playing politics and playing it badly.

It shows he thinks the USA owns the Moon and China is going to steal the limelight, as they are entitled to do if they have the technology.

If I were going to the Moon I would fly Chinese, not in the lowest cost bidder NASA bus.

Let's see who had achieved the most by 2033.

When China made & sent its space station last summer, NASA chief said Chinese space station is not written in English & thus must be dismantled.

NASA chief has a brain problem. Cant think logic anymore.

Chinese space station is a private property. China can use whatever language they want. Who says English is the standard? NASA chief thought USA is god.

USA hires such person to be a chief, no wonder USA is going downhill.

China also share the Chinese space station with the entire world incl USA. But USA does not allow China join US space program.

Thus, I believe China will share the moon with the world. But USA will not.

China and the U.SA are willing to send human to the moon, and China is far ahead of the U.S.A in this mission. Does this mean that we are going to get the next Neil Armstrong from China?

It's an interesting article. However China is not ahead of the United States at all. Looking at the two nations:

China recently delivered a small unmanned probe to the moon. The United States in contrast delivered a car sized rover to the surface of Mars previously which is several orders of magnitude harder. However China is far from having the ability to get to the moon.

No one can claim a foreign planet as it's territory, China knows the Russians' spacecraft are the first to land on the moon.

What would be the international reaction if China is able to get a permanent presence on the moon?

Scenario 1: US would be the first to accused China of stolen the appolo tech.

Scenario2: US would called out fake landing.

Scenario3: US would accused China of colonizing and illegally landed on the moon and demanded of there is freedom of navigation.

Scenario4: US will ban and sanction China for bank fraud, accusing them of using the $1trillion+ interest loan to build the space mission.

Scenario5: US would accused China of building military bases on the moon and illegally mining it.

Is China landing a rover on the darkside of the moon a threat to the USA?

There s no dark side of the moon to begin with. In any case, landing on the far side of the moon is no more a threat to anyone than the US landing multiple rovers on Mars.

Is China's Moon landing mission pushing NASA to try and beat them to the dark side of the Moon (a new Moon race)?

NASA already beat the Chinese and everyone else to the ‘dark’ side.

All Apollo landing sites are periodically in the dark, depending on the phases of the Moon as seen from Earth, just as all the non-Apollo landing sites are periodically in the light, depending again on the Moon’s phases.

If China lands on the Moon, is that likely to increase NASA's interest in lunar missions?

NASA is always interested in lunar missions. NASA is always interested in Martian missions. NASA is always interested in asteroid missions. NASA is always interested in Jovian missions. NASA exsts to explore.

But NASA doesn't decide where it goes. The President and Congress decide.

So the more accurate question is - If China lands on the moon, is that likely to increase Washington's interest in lunar missions?

And the answer to that is, maybe.

Havent seen any Chinese flags on the moon yet but I have definitely seen a USA flag flying there in defiance of the UN charter saying the moon belongs to no country.
