The Indian Navy commissioned submarine INS Vela adding more teeth to the country’s naval prowess. The submarine was commissioned in the presence of Navy chief Admiral Karambir Singh. INS vela is a scorpene-class submarine built by the govt-owned Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. This is the 4th of the six submarines to be inducted under Kalvari-Class Submarine Project-75. This is also the second major induction in the Indian Navy in less than a week. On November 21, the Navy commissioned warship INS Visakhapatnam.

In January 2018 it was reported that an aft hatch on the submarine was left open by mistake while the Arihant was docked in 2017, leading to saltwater flooding the propulsion area, rendering the submarine inoperative for ten months while corroding pipes were replaced.

They are strategic deterrents. Not useful under normal circumstances. We need more agile and much more sophisticated N powered attack subs, SSNs. We don't have the technology yet to make a capable and small enough reactor though. US won't sell the tech. Russia is apprehensive. France, once again, could be a viable option.
