@j vp The main hurdle with desert rice is water, which obviously is very scarce if not exstent there. Would be better to look for space-influenced breeds of wheat and other types of grains that are naturally far more drought-resistant (also part of China's research; there was a dedicated space-breeding satellite with re-entry pod that launched a few years ago which carried seeds for hundreds of agricultural species).
