Covid-19: Daily case count inching closer to the 4-lakh mark
NEW DELHI: For the ninth day in a row, India recorded over 3 lakh cases, inching closer to the 4 lakh mark with 3,86,693 cases on Thursday. The country reported 3,502 deaths, amid widespread reports of underreporting of fatalities with a gross mismatch of reported deaths and actual cremations across the country.
Cases have been higher than 3 lakh for 9 days in a row now. The country’s positivity rate is at 21.2% (based on smoothed 7 day rolling average of cases and tests). This means that 21 out of 100 people who are being tested are turning positive. Such a high positivity rate means many infections are going undetected. Several experts, including Dr Devi Shetty, feel that the actual level of infections could be at least 5 times more than the cases reported.
The daily case count breached the 1 lakh mark on April 6 and since then it has inched closer to the 4 lakh level. The impact of this level of cases was observed on deaths after a week and on April 13 deaths also touched their previous peak level.
Since April 21 cases have crossed the 3 lakh level while over 3,000 deaths are being reported since April 27. If this pattern is followed and cases continue to rise this steadily, then India should brace itself to see even a higher level of daily deaths in the coming days.
Among states, Maharashtra reported 66,159 cases, the country’s highest, and was followed by Ker, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka — each reporting between 30,000 to 40,000 cases. The national capital reported 24,235 cases which was the country’s fifth-highest.

Why is SC allowing death mismatch? This is dangerous. If ministers do not know value of record kee, better resign. Last year also, deaths were not reported properly.
There is a well groundedvested interest in place to prect the image of Modi than controlling the pandemic.
Salve ji, its the people who should be blamed. A simple example are marriages in closed halls, there were 100's of people attending but without a mask close to my home just before lockdown in our city. The dont care attitude of such people has caused immense problems to others.
Agreed, public is responsible to some extent but you are absolving Modi Govt totally. What abt they gathering huge number of people in rallies in Bengal and allowing Kumbh to happen?
No point in blaming Modi when the whole sy em has col psed. Each one of us underestimated the gravity of situation due to 2nd wave.
21% positive and now govt is scrambling!
Can someone who is honest and has vision please do something to fix this
Only we have the power to fix this by our Ve!
There is lot of blame being hed on Modi but no one is blaming the state CMs, some of them belonging to opposition parties.
Proves that state govns are incompetent.I stay in a state where BJP is ruling there is mismanagement and they have agreed. I dont see the same coming from other states especially Delhi and Maharashtra.
And BJP ruled states like Gujarat and UP underreporting Covid cases and deaths?
Case counts would be multiple times more than reported numbers --- as RT-PCR testing scale has come down in many parts.......? -- Death toll was under-stated from the begng..... with po itical motives.
you mean 40-50 lakh mark? as most govtss are under reporting this pandemic?
The most rming thing is numbers are on the rise, how to control it ?
Modi is responsible for the deteriorating and dangerous situation. As leader of the country the buck stops with him.
saffron ...they were busy in catching power from other parties ...
This is not merely monumental mismanagement and collosal incompetence of the Modi govt, but a crime committed ag inst humanity. It is most shocking that despite such unpardonable dereliction, not even one from the Central Go nment or Covid task force have taken responsibility and accountability to quit on moral grounds.
Infact I believe that there aren't as many cases as are being reported. Fakery is all across.
Running away from reality are we now???
Will it ever come down?
