Tweet responsibly: India hits back at foreign celebs for supporting farmers

NEW DELHI: India has hit out at "vested interest groups" for imposing, as the go nment said, their agenda on farmers' prests after a wave of support to these ongoing prests from celebrities in the West.

Before rushing to comment on such matters, the MEA said in a statement, "we urge that facts be ascertained, and a proper understanding of the issues at hand be undertaken."

Among those who had expressed solidarity with the farmers on Twitter were pop star Rihanna, environmental activist Greta Thunberg and also US Vice-Presi nt Kla Harris' lawyer niece Meena Harris.

As it sought to prevent the prests from going global, the go nment said that the Indian Parliament, after a full debate and discussion, passed reformist legislation relating to the agricultural sector. These reforms, it said, gave expanded market access and provided greater flebility to farmers, apart from paving the way for economically and ecologically sustainable farming.

The go nment also cmed that a very small section of farmers in parts of India had "some reservations" about these reforms.

"Respecting the sentiments of the prestors, the go nment of India has initiated a series of talks with their representatives. Union Ministers have been part of the negotiations, and eleven rounds of talks have already been held. The Go nment has even offered to keep the laws on hold, an offer iterated by no less than the Prime Minister of India," it said.

"Yet, it is unfortunate to see vested interest groups trying to enforce their agenda on these prests, and derail them. This was egregiously witnessed on January 26, India’s Republic Day. A cherished national commemoration, the anniversary of the inauguration of the Constitution of India, was besmirched, and violence and vandalism took place in the Indian capital," added the go nment.

According to the go nment, these vested interest groups also tried to mobilise international support ag inst India and, instigated by such fringe elements, Mahatma Gandhi statues were desecrated in parts of the world.

Bharat Desh

Useless efforts by so called "Kisan" goons. Talk to gt professionally and go back to fields.

Ravi Kulkarni

Greta thurnberg the so called environment crusader should be concerned first about the same farmers creating environmental issues by insisting on burning stubble.

Manu R

Good to see that the MEA has reacted quickly to these retards who don't know their x$$ from their elbows.

The prestors must be forced to see the reason. India must not be a soft state. Anyone cannot block the roads and prest on streets. Prtest must be at designated places. Else Police must be given free hand to deal.

Shivaji Bhosle

As I mentioned earlier, Kla Harris is anti-India. She supported Pakistan on Kashmir issue during her primaries yet Indian diaspora ved for her.

The only vested interests in this prest is the one displayed by our PM towards Ambani and Adani. To prect their vested interest he is sacrificing our farmerrs.

Sarma V

The way the gt is treating the farmers by barticading cutting off water supply, blocking internet, letting loose its goons on them, anyone,be it national or international, will criticise the gt.

Where were Rihanna and Meena Harris when the Capitol Hill siege took place? To comment on someother country without knowing the context and facts is a sinful action. I would say Twitter should be banned in India.

Rajesh Kumar
