Deaths, self-immolation draw scrutiny on China tech giants
China's internet industries already were known for long, demanding days. With millions of families confined at home, demand surged and employees delivered tons of vegetables, rice, meat, diapers and other supplies, often aboard scooters that exposed them to sub-freezing winter cold.
For white-collar workers in the technology industry, pay is better than in some industries but employees are often expected to work 12 hours a day or more.
The human cost caught public attention after the deaths of two employees from e-commerce platform duoduo, known for selling fresh produce at low prices. Their deaths prompted suggestions they were overworked.
The controversy is a blow to the image of internet industries that are transforming China's economy and generating new jobs. They have made some of the founders among the worlds wealthiest entrepreneurs
Separately, a 43-year-old delivery driver collapsed on the job and died last week while delivering food for Eleme.
The company said in a statement that it will give 600,000 yuan ($92,700) to the drivers family and raised its insurance coverage for drivers to that level.
In India too, the wfh culture made workers to work 12 to 14 hours, constantly hooked to their mobile phone & computer, that makes a lot more depression. In fact, my daughter is working almost 14 hours a day continuously without any break even for lunch or tea! Very pathetic in IT industry.
Who cares why the Chinese die. Let's focus on India.
The work culture in China is inhumane and very different from what people are used to in india. People in general are expected to work long hours without any break.
If something is in excess, it looses value.. problem with china & India, they have excess of Manpower.. hence No Value given to human resource.
if they have excess manpower, why people are over working ?
I always paid generous tips during pandemic and even now to any delivery boy...
In india many people die of hunger... no food no job no bother... LOL
The neighbouring country is the reason the whole world is troubled right now and now their own public too

I was in Muscat during 1999 and there was a 13-hour work cycle. In India, it's 8 hours and in go nment offices, many are working for less than 8 hours.
China and Pakistan are made for each other.
I think this is the beginning of the fall of China. China has grown to this level over many dead bodies.
China, Japan and Souh Korea are among the countries with inhuman working hours.
No one should be forced to work for more than 8 hours. If so, employers should pay 2.5 times of wage rate applicable for 8 hours per day.
First of all do they have any labor Laws in China??
In Japan it is so common that there is a Japanese word for the death because of over work. It is called Karoshi. Please read beautiful report by BBC on Karoshi.
