NEW DELHI: Now all national highways that act as feeder roads to the China border or are of strategic importance for national security would be 10 metres wide, the road transport and highways ministry has said.

新德里:印度公路运输和高速公路部表示,现在所有通往中印边境的支线公路或对国家安全具有战略重要性的国道,都将拓宽至10米。

The highways ministry modified its two-year-old circular limiting the width of such roads to 5.5 metre, which had become a bone of contention for the Chardham road widening project. The ministry, in a circular issued on Tuesday, said the earlier width standard does not address the issue concerning strategic roads. It said the standards prescribed have been further reviewed in light of the issues raised by the defence ministry.

The modified circular says, “For roads in hilly and mountainous terrain which act as feeder roads to the China border or are of strategic importance for national security, the carriageway width should be 7 metres with 1.5 metres paved shoulder on either side.”

It's not just the width. Follow the International standard of road building first. Make the standard mandatory all over India so that quality roads are developed. India is a laughing stock when foreigners look at our roads we drive on.

Indian highways should not negotiate mountains and valley. Just drill tunnels through the mountains and build bridges over the valley. Should be able to reduce travelling time by 67%.

Chinese highways are all 33 meters wide (3 lanes either side with 1.5 meters paved road shoulder for emergency). It is high time India should build highways of similar standard.
