原文标题：Lesson from 1962: India must never lower its guard
th anniversary of the 1962 Sino-Indian border war should be an occasion to look to the future rather than commiserate about the past. It seems odd that the 50th anniversary appears to be generating more commentary and reminiscences than the earlier decadal anniversaries, despite the longer passage in time. Since time is said to be a great healer, why do the wounds of the past continue to fester?
All history is viewed through the prism of our present. The 1962 war is no different. It has acquired a contemporary salience precisely because rising China looms larger on our radar screen than ever before. As the respective economic and military capabilities of India and China continue to expand outwards, beyond their frontiers, it is inevitable that they will bump against each other, particularly in Asia. This may sharpen the sense of rivalry between them. The 1962 border war becomes a metaphor for this competition and possible conflict.
A lesson of the 1962 war is that India must never let down its guard. It must deploy sufficient military and logistics capabilities to deter any 1962-style surprise attack. We are better prepared than ever before, but this is not a static. We need to have the ability to respond effectively as China upgrades its own capabilities and logistics in Tibet. We need to maintain our current edge in the maritime domain. Our recent Agni-V test and the development of submarine-based nuclear forces have imparted greater symmetry between Indian and Chinese nuclear deterrence capabilities. But it is important to locate these efforts in a broader strategy for managing India-China relations in all its dimensions.
Brig. B.S. Sidhu (retd) (Gurdaspur)
India will and must continue to arm herself. But may I mention that 2012 is not 1962!. While India was ill-prepared and ill-equipped during that period (1962) China had 4 million troops well armed by the USSR while we had 300,000 poorly equipped troops mainly on the Pakistani border. China also had no enemies then. Then as all expected China deceived the USSR and the USSR castrated the Chinese in 1969. Moreover China lost to Vietnam in 1979. While we must never drop our guard but we must note that all fake data on China is coming mainly from the USA. In most skirmishes with China after 1962 we had an edge and we are certainly superior to the Chinese militarily. BUT LET US NEVER DROP OUR GUARD AND CONTINUE TO ARM SELVES. FOR ANY WISE NATION THIS PROCESS NEVER ENDS.
India should make war with China (EU)
Uncle Sam would very happy, if India made a war with China. India and China have modern (imported) weapons. So the chances of wars are high. Mondern weapons should be used and tested. So, India must start a war with China. If Hindu-India wins a war, then the Hindus are the great people for me.
Others Lesson’s from 1962 : 1) Don’t be arrogant in dealing with neighbors (especially who are bigger than you and have a remarkable civilization and history behind them). 2) Know the facts before claiming ownership of the land. 3) Don’t try to fool people with claims of patriotism when you are on wrong foot. 4) State the facts correctly.
Actually a world concerted effort needs to be made to dismantle China, like the Soviet Union has been dismantled. China has exapnsionist policies and is slowly enchroaching Indian territory. You can not nagotiate with China but stand firm and war is not an option, but if leads to war, then so be it. More recently China has been arguing with Japan about some islands both say they claim. All non-democratic, communist and islamic nations must be dismantled for world peace.
Before the world tries to dismantle China, China would engulf India. Unless our politicians are clean and honest, we cannot think of a better India.
Nanak Singh Puri (Delhi)
Keep arming yourself as this is an endless process. Keep your tactical and thermonuclear weapons ready. Do not forget 2012 is not 1962 we have certainly a military edge over Communist China. Have confidence, be well armed yet work for peace.
Tiger replies to Nanak Singh Puri
Yes I agree, but as I said war is not an option but if things lead to war, then so be it.
J.S. Tomar (Panipat) replies to Tiger
If there is a war both India and China will suffer severe damage but China is also likely to possibly vanish as India has a hidden trump card.
China will not attack India. China would have never attacked India in 1962. Mao and Chow while showing outward courtesy to Nehru were disgusted with Nehru’s arrogance. Mao used to call Nehru a useful idiot. He ordered attack not to teach a lesson to India but to teach a private lesson to Nehru. With Nehru as a prime minister, Menon as a defence minister and Gen Kaul as commander, the three great incompetents at the helm, a humiliating defeat was imminent. Nehru learned lesson well. His make believe world collapsed which shattered him inside and outside and he was gone within two years. Had he lived another ten years India would have suffered humiliating defeat in 1965 and 1971 wars as well.
The border skirmish was started on some misunderstanding as both countries just woke up from colonial imperialism. If India blames China of occupying and treating Tibet badly, what about Northeast and Kashmir, which India took forcibly? Why there is low-level conflict/war in northeast for last 60 years. Does everyone recognise it? No one should look at it from the prism of 1962 war every time when we talk about bilateral relation. Does everyone recognise that Dalai, his Holiness, once blamed and accused Pt Nehru and India before he fled to India. He is just treating India as ‘friendly’, but he always praised China and said wanted Tibet to be a part of China.
Rajesh Dutt (Delhi) replies to Wungnor
There is an elected govt in Kashmir. No one is against India except a handful of terrorists and political ambitious ‘moderates’. Had people of Kashmir were against India, they wudnt have taken part in democratic process. People of Arunachal Pradesh are strictly with India, there is not a single protest against Indian rule. People of these states are Indians at heart. And what happens in Tibet? People are self-immolating despite the brutal rule of gun. Their supreme leader is forced to fled. And China says Arunachal is south Tibet. First it should prove that Tibet belongs to China. Tibet was never a part of China except for a very brief period. Why should other people believe the chinese description of history. They have border disputes with all their neighbours and they say it is problem leftover of history. History says Tibet was never a part of China. These Chinese must not taught history, they themselves need to learn it and learn it accurately
Assamese (阿萨姆邦) replies to Wungnor
Who told you Assam, Arunachal Pradesh or even Kashmir were forcibly occupied by India? Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have been part of India dating back to more than 5000 years. This can be proven through the epic Mahabharata. In Mahabharata, Pragjyotishpur was the capital of a King who fought in the Kurukshetra war.
While Kashmir and even entire Pakistan and parts of Afghanistan belonged to India for a period more than 10000 years, till 1947 AD. If Chinese bring up some ‘historical’ evidence, we Indians have much more valid historical evidence than they have. Also the Chinese never came on to the Tibet plateau in their entire history. The Communist government of China is lying through its teeth. It is all fake communist propoganda. Just like USSR they and their lies will vanish from the face of the earth.
Tiger (USA) replies to Wungnor
Yah okay Paki. Keep dreaming and believing your lying mullahs and that pathetic cult of a religion called islam.
Major Shyam Singh Verma (Retd) (Palwal)
Chinese in Communist China are Kilometers (one kilo in weight and one meter in height). Indians are a great democracy and brainy people and our wrestlers often decimate the Chinese. No genuine army guy in India thinks much of China. Even a kid knows 5 AGNI-6 (MRVS) and China is history. India has many hidden secrets and AGNI-5 demonstrated was from a production batch and it is an old missile.
We must nor forget our mistake in the war. Much like Pakistan always blames India for the 1965 and 1971 wars, we and our media have a tendency to overlook our own aggression and misadventure. It was the “forward policy” by Nehru and lack of preparedness by Gen Kaul, in which we kept pushing deeper and deeper into disputed territory by occupying forward posts and severely underestimating china’s military. Remember that it was not unreasonable for china not to recognize the borders arbitrarily drawn by the british. We should have peacefully negotiated with them. We kept proclaiming Hindi-chini bhai bhai but at the same time kept pushing forward on the boundary and occupying more posts despite strong Chinese protests until the reacted.

PEACE CANNOT BE MADE WITH CHINESE TREACHEROUS CAVEMAN

Nehru Bhai had syphilis.. It affected his brain and that’s why he made friends with chinkies and India lost
Mr. Bernard Wijeyasingha (Clinton, USA)
Great headlines. “India must never lower its guard” yet since then China claims more and more of Indian territory. Pakistan has actually gifted a part of the POK to China and India has fought three wars with Pakistan where two of them were provoked by Pakistan. As for Kashmir, New Delhi has not only lowered her guard, she has in a sense allowed the Pakistani backed Lakshar e Taiba cleanse Kashmir of all non Hindus making that state a Muslim state. New Delhi is eloquent with words but is pitiful when it comes to action. New Delhi has not yet learned anything from the 1962 defeat by China.
World listen and respect those who are perceived to be powerful ,both, financially and in military terms. Otherwise you may keep calling meetings after meetings -result will be Zero.
In 1962 Communist China was not a global economic player and the Chinese policies were driven by the so called Gang Of Six. In 1962 China didn’t have a world exposure in politics, economy, etc. China marched into Tibet without any reprisal from the rest of world. Today in 2012, China will have a tough time maintaining that aggressive policy without getting economic reprisal from rest of the world. China’s economy would collapse overnight if it renders to military aggressiveness similar to 1950s or 1960s because economic reprisal from the rest of the world would be swift.
Bahu Virupaksha (Pondicherry)
The first meaningful lesson that India must learn is that China is now a Great Power and India is not. India and China are no longer in competition as they were in 1962. China has out performed India and India is bearing the cross of scams, dynastic fascism, scandals, criminalization of the political system while China has moved into the league of civilized nations Chinses Universities are now in the list of top 100 Universities and Chinese performance in the recent Olympics was spectacular. This being the case there is no point in militariuly trying to contain China as that country will whip India hands down. A lesson from History is worth learning. For 2000 years the two civilizations lived in peace and it was Nehru who provoked China in 1962. I think instead of this mindless aggression towards China let India talk peace and China will listen. Unfortunately, India is being drawn into the American game of pitting India against China.
We have learnt a lot from our past mistakes of war in 1962 and let us hope we do not repeat them. But we have to be constantly vigilant on our eastern border because we do not know what is in their mind. After 15 rounds of talks with this country nothing has come out as positive and this country is helping our western neighbour and trying to create wedge with our immediate other neighbours.Only very strong defense and will power will work and nothing else to deal with this problem.
stop buying russian ……..start by isreali and american wepon………….and german and france wepon…………stop buying for long term…………….start making your own…………clean up the corruption
Nehru’s famous words when India lost vast tracts of land to China in 1962: “Where a blade of grass does not grow!”
RajB (Bangalore) replies to scamnivas
And Tilak said to Nehru, “Nothing grows on your head too, so should we cut it and offer it to China.” That shut Nehruji up and he needed Dulcolax to clean his bowels the next day.

Lesson from 1962: India must never lower its guard : Will someone tell this to our defence minister who does not even react to consistent Chinese intrusions in our territory and presence in POK. There is silence on the Chinese building a dam on Brahmaputra too

A very well written article. I have always found it strange that two old civilizations which have been regularly oppressed by outside powers have unhealthy relations with each other. These oppressed civilizations should co-operate to promote a peaceful world order. Off course guards will have to be kept up for a long time to come. We must also ponder over whether we are becoming the victim of anti-China western propaganda. We don’t want a powerful enemy but a powerful friend in China.
KirtiKumar Kasat (Jodhpur)
Truly said. China is no friend to India even now. We must not bow down to them.
we should never ever believe chinkies
