外文标题：Fire kills 112 at poultry plant in northeast China
BEIJING: A massive fire broke out at a poultry plant in northeastern China early Monday, trapping workers inside a cluttered slaughterhouse and killing at least 112 people, reports and officials said.
Several dozen people also were hurt in the blaze in Jilin province’s Mishazi township, which appeared to have been sparked by three early-morning explosions, the official Xinhua News Agency said. The provincial fire department, on its microblog, attributed the blasts to an ammonia leak.
State broadcaster CCTV quoted unidentified workers as saying the fire broke out during a change of shifts at the plant, owned by Jilin Baoyuanfeng Poultry Co., and may have originated in a locker room at a time when about 350 workers were at the site.
The plant’s “complicated” interior, narrow exits and a locked front gate made escape difficult, Xinhua quoted survivors as saying. It appeared the death toll could continue to rise as more bodies were recovered from the charred buildings.
Some employees raised the alarm about a fire shortly after a shift began at 6am, and then the lights went out, spiking the level of panic as workers rushed to find an exit, 44-year-old Wang Fengya told Xinhua.
“When I finally ran out and looked back at the plant, I saw high flames,” Wang was quoted as saying. Xinhua said she and three other workers were sent to a hospital in the nearby provincial capital of Changchun.
The disaster killed 62 people, and 54 people were being treated in hospitals, the fire department said in its microblog. Calls to fire and rescue services rang unanswered and hospital administrators said they had no information about the injured.
By about noon, the fire had been mostly extinguished and bodies were being recovered from the charred buildings. CCTV footage showed dark smoke billowing up from the prefabricated cement structures topped with corrugated iron roofs.
The fire highlighted the lax safety standards at many Chinese workplaces.
It could also focus renewed scrutiny on China’s biggest pork producer, Shuanghui International, unrelated to the poultry plant, as it aims to buy US food giant Smithfield in what would be China’s biggest takeover of an American company.
Jason Yan, technical director of the US Grains Council, in Beijing, said safety considerations usually came last in the design of such buildings behind features to maximize production and energy efficiency.
“I’m sure they consider some aspects of safety design. However, I think safety, to me, is not the first priority in their design plan,” Yan said.
Jilin Baoyuanfeng produces 67,000 tons of processed chicken per year and employs about 1,200 people. The plant is located outside the city of Dehui, about 800 kilometers (250 miles) northeast of China’s capital, Beijing.

a slaughterhouse is different from poultry processing plant. I am not writing about China or India, but about animal vs so called human. In fact it is very inhuman to be slaughtering millions and millions of birds & animals for our own survival. It was okay at the time agriculture was not developed. Imagine if birds or animals knew about this accident. Will they be sorry?. And yes, there is no animal/ bird death toll reported. May be they are to be reported as a count in business transaction or when it comes to eating.

will you go and tell the tiger to spare the innocent animals and feed on grass? Human beings are by nature omnivores. They are not herbivore. Nature has designed human body such that he needs both vegetable and meat for his survival. Vegetarians don’t eat meat, they are doing something against natural laws. Same way you don’t allow a tiger to eat meat. Another proof is the human teeth. If you see tiger/lion’s teeth, all are canines which is designed for eating meat. If you see horse/cow’s teeth, all are incisors – the flat teeth designed for eating grass. But humans have both canines and incisors which means humans are designed to eat both.

SO ILL— FATED . NUMBER OF DEATH TOLL IS RISING AS ROCKET…………………
So many chicks were being killed daily in the poultry farm, things are the other way round sometimes. There is nothing sorry about the incidents. Poor little chicks !! All of you together have played the game in a very nice manner. It is always wise to kill rather than get killed.

I was missing your comments Parul. Whatever, at last, you’ve again re-appeared !!! I thought you’re wrong in holding those poor fellows responsible. They were simply discharging their duties, professional commitments. There are chicken eaters all over the world. Its your own choice, whether you’re a veggie or a meat eater. So, no point in holding these 112 fellows for all their sins. I hope you do agree.

Were Jesus, Lord Buddha or guru Govind Singh consumed meat ? I do not think so. Even Mohammad was born in a Hindu family and was a vegetarian.Meaning killing chicks is a sin.

Nothing wrong in eating non veg, dear sweet parul. I am 70 pct non veg, and if don’t consume poultry or fish or egg whites, truly i feel weak. Non veg gives u extra power, vigour. Red meat i take as kababs only. Is yr BF a veg or non.

are vegetarians not killed in accidenrts? you a foolish fellow. it has been proved mnay times by even sciece that humans were first non vegetraians, agriculture was stared later. so atleast u veg have some sympathy towards those killed, bread earners of their family?

I respect vegetarians if they have become vegetarians due to the belief that they should not harm animals. But I guess such a vegetarian will not make totally degrading comments like some seen below. Curse of chickens!! What is inside your head? Are you not taking a life when you eat a plant? Or you brainless ones think that plants are lifeless? These poor workers were making a living by working hard in these farms. You cannot even love the ones in your own species who has burned to death and how dare you preach for chickens? Oh now I got it, your level of thinking and IQ will be closer to that of chicken and hence you connect more with that species. Idiots.
