BEIJING: China’s ‘Occupy Men’s Toilet’ protests to highlight inadequate lavatories for women in the country is gathering steam with a group of girl students using men’s toilets in the capital.

Styled on the lines ‘Occupy Wall Street’ protests in the US, the women protesters, mostly students, used men’s toilets at Deshengmen on Monday to prevail on the authorities to improve sanitary facilities for ladies. Volunteers outside the toilet held banners demanding “More conveniences for women , more gender equality” and “If you love her, don’t let her wait in line” , state run China Daily reported on Tuesday.

“It’s more difficult for women to answer the call of nature than for men as there are insufficient public women’s toilets and the time women spend in the toilet is two or three times more than that of men,” organizer Li Tingting, 23, a university student from Beijing said. Wang Lailin, 20, a student from Zhengzhou, in Central China’s Henan province felt the first flush of success after she used the men’s toilet in Beijing.

“Women were waiting outside the ladies toilet for a long time and some were using the men’s toilet. So I followed them. It was quicker and I saved time as I had a train to catch,” she said. Li, who started the novel protests a few days ago, staged the first ‘occupation’ on Feb 19 at a public toilet in Guangzhou, which triggered a fierce debate.

The urban management commission of Guangzhou immediately responded saying new women’s toilet cubicles in city were required to cover an area at least 1.5 times that of a men’s cubicle. Colleges in Guangzhou have already enlarged women cubicles.

Their demand is genuine; in India, no concern has ever been expressed on the subject, neither by the users nor by the facilitators. It’s a high time for the authorities in urban areas to take note and not to be apathetic any more to such an important civic issue.

Indians women can’t protest “OCCUPATION” like Chinese women do because there is no public toilets to occupy……… If they are really desperate then they may OCCUPY the walls, fields, roads and wherever they feel awkward to answer nature’s call……..

How will I feel in Men Toilet… awful sight men peeeing in line, and women seeing that thing. While pooing everyone will hear each other noises, and get smell. Big thing to occur if women enter men loo.

Oh Oh, why does it have to be an ‘awful’ sight?? It’s just a thing you don’t want to see, but that doesn’t mean the sight is ‘awful’! Besides nobody asked you to use one!

What an ingenious way to protest. Maybe Indian women need to take some cues from them

if you remove the mirror from the women’s toilet, then women will finish their business in 30% of the usual time taken.

Dude, they’ll carry their own mirrors then! And then there will be mirror sharing, and it’ll take 100% more time than what it takes now!
