外文标题：China loses trade dispute over rare earth exports
GENEVA/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - China has lost a dispute at the World Trade Organization over limits on rare earth and metals exports, handing Europe and the United States a victory over what they see as Beijing's unfair trade practices.
"Today's ruling by the WTO on rare earth shows that no one country can hoard its raw materials from the global market place at the expense of its other WTO partners," said EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht.
China produces more than 90 percent of the world's rare earths, key elements in defense industry components and modern technology from iPhones and disk drives to wind turbines.
China imposed strict rare earth export quotas in 2010, saying it was trying to curtail pollution and preserve resources.
A while ago it was 97% of World production. Relying on any one nation for 97% of anything valuable is stupid. relying on China is insane.
They are not trustworthy as their record shows, time for the world to make them pay by charging huge amounts for oil and gas and other commodities they need.
And my neighbor should sell me his new Mercedes for $10,000. The neighborhood should just vote that in and force him to sell
Joining WTO would allow you to do that actually...dumbaxx
This is just like OPEC, except this time it's China. When the Arabs disagreed with the price of a Barrel of Oil they started walking out of OPEC. Suddenly, every Arab Nation was facing the threat of War with America and Israel. Look at the entire Middle East, and what has happened there over the Price of a Barrel of Oil. The Arabs had a right to sell their Oil for whatever price they wanted so long as someone was willing to pay. Just like China now has a right to sell Rare Earths at any price they want if someone will pay it.
let china keep its valuable resources. We just stop buying its products.
I call BS on the WTO decision. Sorry. I think a country can do what ever it wants with its own resources.
So china should leave WTO. Why join the the first place, moron?
China imposed strict rare earth export quotas in 2010, saying it was trying to curtail pollution and preserve resources. THAT SOUNDS AS PLAUSIBLE as the Unaffordable ACA!
Rare earth and black sand minerals to produce metal parts and magnets imported from China are actually stolen or smuggled by Chinese poachers from Philippine shores. These chinese thugs are engaged in illegal mining activities all over the Philippines.
The native americans filed complaint that the white man over took their land...unfortunately nobody cared..
China should withdraw from the WTO (Wild Toads Organization), and reserve the right to refuse to sell any rear earth to Japan for national security purpose.
The U.S. went into Iraq for their oil. Went into Afganistan for their rare earth and metals. Wow is no one out there listening or looking ?
yup, but no one seems to care
Now calculate the economic damage done and send the bill to China.
If they refuse to pay place tariffs on all their exports until it gets paid
The US has the rare earth mines in California, Nevada, etc. We should be mining our own materials first but the federal government is always getting in the way.
But you and many like you refuse to work in mining.
Ken the Libertarian
If China ignores the judgement, I'm sure Obuttho will have John Kerry send them a sharply worded note.
If China puts in place the same EPA regulations as the USA, there will be little supply and prices will soar.
The Chinese counter-argument might run like nthese: "Yes, we do produce 90% of the world's rare earth minerals. But China does not contain 90% of the earth's rare earth minerals. Rare earth minerals abound throughout the world but most often only in small deposits, making mining for then very expensive.
Set up another world trade organization!
China has to pollute their environment to produce and sell their rare earth! LOL!
Rare earth elements can be produced domestically if the EPA allows it. It's a dirty process with waste products like thorium that are radioactive and hard to deal with.
Sell it cheaply, it becomes dumping like in solar panel. Raise the price and it is against WTO rules. Maybe China should sell only to the highest bidders as in any free market,
wto legalize western nation to plunder the resources of china
China is going to implode because of $ 2 trillion in bad loans domestically.
Just To Be Fair
WTO is nothing but an organization set up to protect USA and Europe.
Set up to protect the free world... not slave labor camps in China.
