外文标题：China looking to sign FTA with Sri Lanka
BEIJING: China is keen to sign a free trade agreement with Sri Lanka. This was conveyed to Sri Lankan leaders including prime minister DM Jayaratne on Tuesday by senior Communist leader Liu Yunshan during his ongoing visit to Colombo, according to the official news agency Xinhua.
The new move is significant for India because Liu thanked the leadership in Colombo for supporting "issues involving China's core interests," as Xinhua described it. China includes its border claims, Tibet and Taiwan issues among its "core interests". However, there is no sign that China-India relationship was discussed during Liu's visit.
Reporting from Colombo, Xinhua quoted Liu telling Sri Lankan Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa that China looked forward to the establishment of a China-Sri Lanka free trade zone as soon as possible.
Rajapaksa responded saying his country is confident of an early signing of a free trade deal with China given the positive progress in the negotiations over the past six months.
Liu, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China, praised the "high level of mutual political trust" between the two countries.
Furthering China-Sri Lanka friendship "not only serves the interests of both nations, but also helps promote peace, cooperation and development of the whole region," Liu said.
FTA's are all good in theory but the sheer difference in scale makes me wonder how much Sri Lanka will benefit from this.

India should have a greater influence on its neighbours. It is India's great loss if we are not able to maintain friendly relations even with our 'nicer' neighbours. Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar to name a few, should have greater Indian influence than Chinese. Lets hope our Foreign minister looks into these pressing matters. Soft power is a great way to influence policy and decision making. Historically India has had great soft power influence over the world through trade and culture. When signed, this FTA agreement will hamper the growth of Indian producers who export to Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankans and rulers of Sri Lanka knows the double standard of India very well. Sri Lankans and rulers of Sri Lanka knows how India acted against Sri Lanka. Enemy is far better than fake friend. Pakistan and China are real, honest, trustworthy and confident friends of Sri Lanka. Very near future Sri Lanka will sign defence treaty with China and Pakistan also.

China has such a good relation with all the neighboring countries except India, because India itself does not want good relations with any of its neighbors. Actually India is afraid of China after 1962
