外文标题：China ignores US warning on Snowden
BEIJING: China on Tuesday brushed aside US warnings that the Edward Snowden affair will have a negative effect on mutual relations and hit out at a White House suggestion that it had facilitated the flight of the whistleblower from Hong Kong as "groundless".
The statement comes amid praise for Snowden in the government-controlled media that is describing him as an "idealist" and a "hero".
"US has no reason to call into question the Hong Kong government's handling of affairs according to law," foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said. "The United States' criticism of China's central government is baseless. China absolutely cannot accept it."
The White House earlier said that the decision by Hong Kong, a Chinese territory, to allow Snowden to leave was "a deliberate choice by the government to release a fugitive despite a valid arrest warrant and that decision unquestionably has a negative impact on the US-China relationship."
The foreign ministry spokeswoman said the Hong Kong government's decision to let Snowden go, saying it handled the case completely according to law is beyond dispute and all parties should respect this.
Most observers agree the Chinese government, which has considerable influence on the Hong Kong administration, decided to let Snowden travel out in order to avoid day-to-day tussle with Washington, which wanted him detained and deported to the US for trail.
Handing him over to the US would result in the newly formed Xi Jinping government lose face, and appear as an appendage of Washington. With other countries including Russia entering the picture, China has been able to diffuse the pressure brought on it by the US government, sources said.
"In a sense, the United States has gone from a model of human rights to an eavesdropper on personal privacy, the manipulator of the centralized power over the international Internet, and the mad invader of other countries' networks," the overseas edition of People's Daily, the Communist Party of China's mouthpiece, said.
"The world will remember Edward Snowden," the newspaper said. "It was his fearlessness that tore off Washington's sanctimonious mask."
I love the chinese scriptwriters above, for their comedic effect.

But it's still funny. They really need to get out of the 1970's style of Cold War rhetoric. To be fair, the hypocrisy displayed by the American's is also pretty funny.

No country wants to handover snowden even if found, as US has snooped all the countries, there is an element of anger against US, this snowden exposed all those, so for US, he became a traitor, but not for other countries.

LOL - lose lose situation for the Chinese it seems. If they instructed Hong Kong to hand him over, human rights activists would be jumping up and down about Chinese interference over Hong Kong (which in reality it does anyway) and it would look weak to the Chinese public, if they let him go, which they did, they annoy the USA. Hmmmm.... what to do.
