外文标题：Slammed for being stingy, China boosts aid to Philippines
China promised to send $1.6 million in relief supplies to The Philippines on Thursday, following intense criticism for playing politics when it offered only $100,000 cash earlier in the week to aid in the aftermath of typhoon Haiyan.
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the government would send 10 million yuan ($1.64 million), adding to the initial cash pledge from Monday. President Xi Jinping also reportedly called Filipino President Benigno Aquino III on Wednesday to offer condolences, Chinese state media reported.
“May the Filipino people overcome the disaster and rebuild their homeland at an early date,” Mr. Xi told Mr. Aquino.
As a filipino as say thank you china, but please no strings attached. Didn't china demand aquino to renounce claim to spatlys and others to get invited to chinese trade fair months ago. They give you 100k today, tomorrow they tell you to buy their inferior products. There goes your 100k, returning to mainlandas 1000k.
I was struck by the comment my Filipina wife made when she heard that China was sending 100,000. Thank you China, and she was sincere.
China , just keep your money for your citizen who need help, Philippines would rather get help without string attach and many freedom loving nations are sending donations for Filipinos in Tacloban.
Imagine china has all the power and strength like the US. The World will be an immense gulag to serve the communist elite
Chinese. God is fair . the strongest who rules the world always valued human right like DEMOCRACY FREEDOM ,JUSTICE ,EQUALITY
Yeh China doesnt care about the pacific islanders, but they sure want to gobble up as many pacific islands as they can steal.
This is why China will never be a true superpower.
I agree! It shouldn't have given any money at all!
There going to send a ship of poisonous Milk.
South China Sea is owned by China!!! Hence South China Sea!
If china finds it hard to help the Philippines, it should follow its heart and not aid the Philippines. It's hard Filipinosto swallow something from somebody who gave it against their will. Ph will survive, having still some generous friends. At least we know who's our real friends.
What ungrateful creatures of darkness these Filipinos are.
Don't take food and products made in china .They are laced with poison and dangerous chemicals.
haven't you figured it out yet??? china only takes they don't give, and if they do give you can bet there are conditions attached to the check.
China did give! See China, even when you give donations, they complain! What ungrateful thieving creatures of darkness these Filipinos are!
Avery, Philippines NEVER asked a single cent from China. So tell your communist party leaders to keep your money and use it to pay your 50 cent posts.
China does nothing in the interest of anyone, except itself.
Tell us one reason why China should help the philippines
We have thousands of reasons not to.
Philippines doesn't need help from China. We don't need you. Get out!
What China essentially sent was pocket change or empty token gesture. The US donated 10 times more than that. China's leadership simply do not know how to cultivate good will that will pay dividends in the coming future. A real shame esp. when China is trying to prove itself to be a capable world power.
I don't recall them being called stingy when they sent millions of dollars in Aid to the US for Katrina.
Much smaller countries donated more than China. If you do not give out of good will just do not give anything. It will be better PR than $1.2mil and especially funny looking initial $100,000.
A little divided about this. I'm happy to see China get shamed into doing the right thing. However, I personally believe that no country or individual should give charitably if it's not in their heart to do so. In this case, it's a disaster relief effort, but even so you can sort of understand China's reluctance in giving aid and comfort to a (supposed) enemy. Anyway, it's still hilarious to see China lose face on this and have to make it up.
De La Genio
and how much did Phillipines send to China in 2008 Earthquake?
I know it's wrong and meaningless to compare donations but when you point your finger at someone please look at yourself first.
Its very wrong and has no logic! what amount would you expect a poor country like the Philippines would give? BILLIONS OF DOLLARS? Common think about it!
China has more poor people then the Philippines! The Philippines is just extremely corrupt!
They have enough of our money to rebuild the Philippines.
China is not a super power, barely even considered as a strong regional power. Its' GDP per capita is ranked 90 among all the countries according the world bank data ...
China has been building up its military capabilities like a super power, and bullying neighboring countries like a super power.
They didn't have to donate anything. America on the other hand, isn't so lucky
What's the difference between a street begger and the philippines?
When you give to the begger, he is grateful and thanks you
When you give to the philippines, the people yell at you for "not giving enough"
en, american has much higher moral standard. In 1998, American donated $20,000 to China after the disastrous flooding.
And $5M for the SIchuan earthquake? Oh you forget history because you only remember things prior to 2000. By the way, in case you forget, Yangtze floods every year. That's the 1998 flood you're referring to.
Pleaae Those are the American Chinese donating to the mother land heritage. Ignorant #$%$
China does not need American money/help. It is a wealthy country by any standard.
They saw Walmarts earning statement and decided they could afford a few more Shekels.
