NEW DELHI: The Central Board of Secondary Education is getting 25 teachers from China to teach Chinese in Delhi schools, in a renewed effort to make the language available to students after Indian teachers failed to learn it.

For the pilot project, CBSE has tied with Hanban — China's national office for teaching Chinese as a foreign language — to get teachers for 25 schools, which include five Delhi government schools, five Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, five Kendriya Vidyalayas and 10 private schools. The teachers will arrive next month.

Demand for learning Chinese has been growing in keeping with the rise of China and its increasing trade with India. In 2011, CBSE introduced Chinese as a foreign language but had to withdraw it in January 2012 as Indian teachers couldn't pick up the language.

"The teachers from Hanban will work as full-time teachers in 25 affiliated schools. Salaries and hospitality has been worked out and will be borne jointly by the schools and government agencies. In case of private schools, the school management will bear the cost. They will be in India in December," said CBSE chairman Vineet Joshi.

In September 2010, then HRD minister Kapil Sibal had said students in large numbers would learn Chinese and 200 Indian teachers would be trained in the first phase. CBSE then announced the introduction of Chinese, starting in class VI as the third language (optional), from the 2011-12 academic session.

However, as first reported in TOI, the board had to shelve the idea in 2011 as none of the teachers could pick up the language and the Chinese language training arranged by CBSE was discontinued midway. Interested students, the board had said, could be sent to a private online educational firm to learn Chinese as a hobby for a payment of Rs 1,600.

"This is a pilot run and we will assess its impact after a year," Joshi said. "But Chinese teachers will not only be able to teach their own language better, but will also add perspective. Students would also get to learn about the country, its art, culture and tradition," added Joshi.

One more way to extort money in private schools.

i am not against learning any new language, but make sure you first respect your own mother tongue...you have tons of world class languages in your country and still thinking they're not ok... grow folks... just don't think that you need to follow the toe of others... !!
Agree (5)Disagree (1)Recommend (0)

sdewal dewal (melbourne)
Good news, specially in a country where people feel shame in speaking in their mother tongue.

Dear sdewal dewal I endorse you view we feel ashamed of speaking own language even in own country. We are still under British rule. With regard

Do our politician know that for every chinese student it is compulsory to know every thing about chinese culture etc ? why this can not be made compulsory in India to know own language art, culture & traditions? Chinese are successful out side even if they do not know English.

vivekkumar pakhale (India)
It may help to decode Chinese messages and what Chinese think about India. It is important to get known Chinese language specially when Chinese is second most spoken language in the world and China has such a long border and LAC with India. Good move by government, but private schools should not commercialize this thing.
Agree (1)Disagree (0)Recommend (1)

Tomsan Kattackal (NOTA Supporter)
It is good to learn new languages, but it is sad that our teachers failed to learn Chinese and we need to import teachers.
Agree (1)Disagree (0)Recommend (0)

Swaminathans (coimbatore)
It is a good step to bring Chinese teachers to teach Chinese. For commercial purposes, this is essential. ( we know that even in cities like Beijing nobody talks English outside posh business hotels)
Agree (1)Disagree (0)Recommend (0)

Gabbar Singh (USA)
My teach used to say that there is end to ignorance , but, no end to learning. Let people learn as much as they can. No need to fight about what language to learn.

renjijoseph1 (siligury)
Sometimes I feel that the people in the south are being on the defensive as they feel that the Hindi speaking people will push out all others from Government jobs if Hindi is the only official language. We need to give equal importance to all Indian languages.

renjijoseph1 (siligury)
This is a step in the right direction.Language is the medium of communication. We will be able to understand the Chinese and their way of thinking better if we know their language.I hope the presence of Chinese Teachers in India will bring about better understanding between our countries. We should treat them well as our guests so that they take back good impression about our country.
Agree (0)Disagree (2)Recommend (0)

Modi lao Desh Bachao (india) replies to renjijoseph1

raj (AMD)
First we tried to copy English & Now Chinese, history is evident any country try to learn other countries language does not progress . Look at china, Singapore, South Korea , Hong Kong didn't live on other countries language but build their country on hard work

Himwant (South Asia)
Good. It is better to learn Chinese then English.

VENU (Chennai)
The idea is welcome.

Modi lao Desh Bachao (india)
what a foolish move by the board....why has chinese become so important that we are importing chinese teachers too....our markets are already full of chinese products giving less space to inhouse production and on top of it we are getting teachers too....not good...instead board could have selected 25 teachers from india and must ask them to learn chinese and then teach the students

Anurag anurag (Unknown)
After our territorial area, electronic items and cuisine our language is also being infiltrated by Chinese.

Anurag anurag (Unknown)
If it is so hard to learn Chinese that teachers could not do it, how the government is expecting the students to learn it?

swissmaestro (Hyderabad)
This is such a great idea. Thank you Mr. Joshi!

abcd (india)
stupid move.. moreover no one would like to learn a stupid language like chinese
Agree (0)Disagree (1)Recommend (0)

iron2911 (Location) replies to abcd
Dude, a language can't be deemed stupid just cause you can't understand it :

SharmaTheMAN MAN (USA)
Chinese are trying to prefect themselves in ENGLISH and Indian wants to learn Chinese. Backward thinking. Learn English from native speakers of English. You will do better internationally.

Jaspal Singh (Amritsar)
The students will get jobs easily thereafter. Al such facilities should not restricted to Delhi. Spread them in various nooks and corners of the country.

Manoj I M (Mel)
wonderful initiative....many languages should be taught...with pupils having a choice to select...
