BEIJING: Do not roll down the taxi windows. Don't buy a remote-controlled plane without a police chief's permission. And don't release your pigeons.

Beijing is tightening security as its Communist Party congress approaches, and some of the measures seem downright bizarre.

Kitchen knives and pencil sharpeners reportedly have been pulled from store shelves, and there's even a rumour that authorities are on the lookout for seditious messages on pingpong balls.

China always tightens security for high-profile events, like much of the rest of the world. But many of Beijing's rules seem extraordinary.

The government has blocked searches for the phrase 'party congress' on websites including popular Sina Weibo. Also, taxi drivers have been told to remove window handles and require passengers to sign a 'travelling agreement' promising to avoid sensitive parts of the city and not to open their windows or doors if they pass 'important venues'.

sukanta (Mum)
Some of us advocate the china way of growth are we ready for these types of rules as well?
Agree (4)Disagree (2)Recommend (1)

bbbb (shenzhen-china) replies to sukanta
it is better than being in the corrupt state of affairs we are in right now.....
Agree (2)Disagree (5)Recommend (0)

Action (Indian) replies to bbbb
Do you even know what you are talking about? ~~~~~~ A recent New York Times article exposed the corruption of the Chinese Premier, none less. His family grew richer by 2.1 Billion Dollars. ~~~~~~~~ I repeat, you are being naive.

colranbir lamba (PTA)
MORE OF SLAVERY

Indian(India)
Rules are dime a dozen in commie countries because ideology of communism is to make zombies out of humans. But who cares for them. How many in a 1 billion strong, 5 millenia old society will obediently follow all these stupid rules all the time?

Concerned Indian (India)
Such orders, if they are true, will not be followed strictly. However, given the thought process that the communist rulers have, there is nothing strange in such dictats. Chinese public is used to it although it seems strange for us.
Agree (2)Disagree (0)Recommend (0)

Indian (India)
We laugh at their rules, all laugh at our dirt, technologcal backwardness, corruption.

Chrees (india)
and a billion will follow without doubt and question..... .as for us we would have Anna on a FAST, MAMTha changing the INSTRUCTIONS to her language, the BJP going on a yatra and all the rest that want the present GOVT out throwing stones and running wild
Agree (6)Disagree (2)Recommend (0)

doh (india) replies to Chrees
Yes because we are a democracy. We need opposition, else we will blindly follow a elected party rule. China's case is totally different. They have succeeded way ahead of us so no point comparing please.
Agree (3)Disagree (0)Recommend (0)

venkat (Kuala Lumpur)
go on.. ban hair pins, nail cutters, ball pens.... oh, these nuts...

Raj Kumar (Bangalore) replies to colranbir lamba

One thing worth emulating is hanging the corrupt after quick trial
Agree (3)Disagree (0)Recommend (0)

security fear (kl)
WHY ? WHY ? So much of restriction . There are some thing great to Cover Up. Security is good .NOT THIS WAY THIS LEVEL Unless you have to fear something major would not have to go this far .
Agree (2)Disagree (0)Recommend (0)

Action (Indian)
Some naive people look at China and say - Wish we could be like China. ~~~~~~~~~ NEVER, Never would I wish India to be like China. ~~~~~~~~~~ India is going to progress differently and with A LOT OF FREEDOM unlike China.
Agree (5)Disagree (0)Recommend (2)

kamal (Bangalore)

Princess (World Citizen)
China must be like a jail for its people.
Agree (6)Disagree (2)Recommend (4)

Harinder Batra (Ludhiana, Punjab, India)
When it comes to their own security , all rulers behave like neurotics

rajesh (kanyakumari)
if its in india.. taxi drivers remove window glass rathr than remvng handle..haha

Ravindra Dixit (Mumbai)
Ridiculous is the word.

badegg (US)
this kind of news can only make people laughing and only the non-brainers believe it. Pencil sharpeners are every where, what the use to prohibit from selling them now? Unless Chinese gov asks people to turn in all Pencil sharpeners in possesion now. It is funny to see so many readers here are as stupid as the author.
