NEW DELHI: The commander of an Air India domestic flight en route from Delhi to Bangalore on Monday evening got locked out of the cockpit owing to which his co-pilot inside had to make an emergency landing in Bhopal.

The door lock got jammed so badly that even after landing in Bhopal technicians could not open it and had to enter the Airbus A320 cockpit through a window. They finally managed to open the door from inside the cockpit.

“A screw of the lock got loose and fell, jamming the lock. Prima facie, AI crew acted according to the procedure and there was no lapse on their part but the incident puts a question mark on maintenance. We have initiated a probe,” said an official of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.

This is the third bizarre incident reported in the AI within a month with a pilot landing in Mumbai without the ATC clearance followed by a commander allegedly making airhostesses sit on the pilots’ seats and give them a crash course on how to fly a plane.

The commander of AI 403 had left the cockpit to go to the toilet. The DGCA rules stipulate that in such situations a cabin crew member must be called inside the cockpit to ensure there are two people, including a pilot, at all times. The reason, if one of the persons inside the cockpit is incapacitated, the other is able to unlock the door ”which has to remain locked at all times post 9/11”and let the other pilot in.

But on Monday the captain did not have to call a cabin crew member into the cockpit as a supernumerary (trainee pilot) was there to observe how a plane is flown apart from another commander. A severe shortage of co-pilots in the AI means that very often a plane is flown by two commanders.

With the commander locked out and a trainee pilot inside, the sole pilot decided to land at the nearest airport which was Bhopal.

“The commander had left the cockpit for a short while to visit the toilet. On returning, he found the door locked. All efforts to open it even from inside failed. The co-pilot, after taking permission from ground control, diverted the flight to Bhopal and landed at 5.55pm. The flight took off from Bhopal at 8.45 pm after clearance from the DGCA and reached Bangalore at 10.30pm,” an AI spokesperson said.

Today onwards, keep a piece of brick in between so that the door is not locked. But you have to reduce the baggage weight of passengers to compensate for the extra weight of the brick. But again why do you need a door for the cockpit. Just to shut the public out of what all the nasty things(crew flying the plane, extra persons allowed sitting in the cockpit etc) which happen in cockpits.

Air travel has become suddenly hazardous with so many near disaster incidents in the air the latest being the Pilot locked out of the Cockpit?? A pvt plane had a 1000 ft drop due to air pockets two days ago and some day the pilot invited hostess to run the plane all these acts risk the passengers on the plane We hope the Authority is closely watching the incidents and should take timely actions against the persons concerned and help run the Airline efficiently at all times and not put the risk on the passengers

God is always Great, especially for Air India.. Dont foget wha happend last month. As per the internl investigation done by AI, it was found that around 40 minutes one Air Hosters spend in Cokpit and for 7 minutes both pilots were out of the Cokpit.

I don’t know why such confidence-shattering news are reported that may have caused some concern to the passengers but without any trouble fortunately. These are maintenance issues which should be tackled immediately by the airlines’ technical team. Such news really shatter the already low confidence that passengers have over Air India. Is that only AI makes the mistake always or is that only AI news is reported. I hardly see any other airlines making mistake. I doubt that is the case. The lapses of other airlines may not being reported by media or might not be highlighted.

        印度议会一个委员会3日报告说,自上世纪70年代以来,印度空军共损失了999架飞机,人为失误和技术故障时造成飞机事故的主要原因。而就在5日,又一架型号为米格-27的飞机坠毁,飞行员也遇难。
        报告称,在发生事故的999架飞机中,“39.5%的事故由技术缺陷导致,39%的事故因人为失误而发生”。另外,1.6%的事故因为服务差错而引起,9%的事故由飞鸟引发,其余的事故由飞机生产商印度斯坦航空有限公司负责。
        报道称,发生事故的多数飞机为米格系列飞机。该系列飞机将逐步从印度空军中退役,预计在未来4-5年全部退出。
