Why is China building so many skyscrapers?
Practically speaking, the US had a bad case of 'skyscraper - building' when it experienced that disease called 'affluenza'. The Arabian state caught the disease also. And China as well.
Hongda Zeng, proud citizen
China is building more skyscrapers than other countries because of 3 important reasons.
First is the fact that China doesn't have a long of land available. Most of the cities are already full of residential buildings which makes land inside the city limit very very expensive. Thus developers need to make sure they get as much as possible out of the plot they get - by building upwards.
Second is the fact that China is developing at a time when the technology for building skyscraper have matured. Unlike many western countries whose cities have been planned out and largely built in the 60s, China can take advantage of existing knowledges and build more efficient cities.
Last is the fact that real estate prices are through the roof now. People want to buy more and more properties. The market is just reacting to the demand and is increasing the supply of properties (as skyscrapers).
They are building them because there is a demand for them, in short. Developers can maximize their profits by building into the sky. As Hongda Zeng also noted, China doesn't have a lot of land available too.
Bryce Emantsal, been there
There's nothing desperate about it. China is very populated, so it'd be smarter to build taller buildings.
Same reason with United States
Jason Kam, Amateur skyscraper fanatic
There are a number of motives for this, including:
Legitimate demand for commercial/residential space
Providing jobs and morale for its citizens

Because the CCP is trying to boost China’s economy with construction projects (usually useless).
Of course it doesn’t mean every skyscraper is built for that, but most of them are. There are also other reasons to build skyscrapers like rising real estate prices.
Many people seem to forget that most of the Chinese cities don’t look like this:
…but more like this:
Most of the skyscrapers built in China aren’t meant to be efficient, but more like boost the GDP numbers artificially.
And no, Chinese cities are not more developed than American ones.
