Women who fought off gang rape 'shamed' by having heads shaved in Indian village square
Two women who fought off a gang of sexual assailants were publicly “shamed” by having their heads shaved and being paraded in a village square, Indian police said.
A 48-year-old woman and her newly married 19-year-old daughter were allegedly “punished” in the village of Vaishali, in the eastern state of Bihar, for fighting off a local ward councillor.
Police said Mohammad Khurshid and his accomplices entered the women’s home, assaulted them and when they were beaten back decided to mete out the public insult as revenge.
The ward councillor, a barber and three others were arrested by police on Thursday, after a video of the incident went viral on social media.
Station House Officer Sanjay Kumar of Bhagwanpur police station confirmed the incident and said that the matter is under investigation.
He said that half a dozen people barged into the victims’ house and attempted to rape the daughter. After the mother tried to rescue her daughter, the accused physically assaulted the two women.
One of the accused beat them with wooden sticks, dragged them outside their house and held a “panchayat” - a village council meeting, more often akin to a kangaroo court.
Mr Khurshid called a barber and ordered him to shave the women’s heads, and paraded them across the village, said SHO Kumar.
“Around 6.30 pm, half a dozen armed men forcibly entered my house and attempted to rape me”, the daughter told the police, reported the Press Trust of India (PTI).
“When my mother tried to save me, they started beating us”, she added.
According to PTI, witnesses said that Mr Khurshid had claimed the women were involved in a prostitution racket.
Shaving someone’s head is a method of insulting and shaming them, as well as a mark of grieving for dead relatives, especially among Hindus and Buddhists.
Indian media referred to the women being “tonsured” - which is when monks or nuns have their locks shorn before entering religious orders.
Even in a country with a notoriously high level of sexual crime against women the case has sparked outrage for the assumed impunity with which the suspects acted.

Why are victims( mainly female ) shamed when something bad happens to them? I read several pieces by psychologists who stated that we want to feel safe and tgat the world is a predictable place where if we just do good, very little bad will happen to us. Of course, the universe isn’t like that...we live in a violent universe where human life is fragile. But we don’t want to think about that...making it the victim’s fault (someone who is already traumatized and cannot fight back ), we keep our psyche’s safe and protect our image of ourselves in our world.

Blame the victim typical of a patriarchal society. The same for why a women is forced to wear a burka because a man cannot control himself if he was to see some skin.
India is a banana republic with no law and order in any state since the BJP came to power in 2014. Women are assaulted with impunity by the higher class and influential people. People belonging to Muslim community and lower castes are beaten to death on a regular basis with police being part of the spectators. After politicians and bureaucrats, police is the most corrupt institution in India. They use criminal laws to harass people and extort money, and never to protect the community. Unlike the U.S. or other western countries, common man is more alarmed with the presence of a policeman than feeling safe.
India...may have a lot of history and beauty to see...it's another country like those in the 'Sand box" that I would never go.
I would love to visit India some day, but that will never, ever happen. As a female, I'm not about to take that kind of risk.

A friend of mine always sleeps with a brick. She woke up one night with a man on top of her. She grabbed the brick on her bed side table and slammed it into his head. As he stumbled away bleeding she got him twice more throwing bricks at him. Then when he crawled out the window the way he came in, my friend went around the outside and got him one more time with a brick, she was chasing him down the street holding a brick with out a stitch on when she realized maybe she'd better go back inside. The Police found him by following a blood trail all the way to his apartment. Every rapist deserves a brick to the face.
India and their caste systems, on the other hand this shaving heads, especially in hot climates as in sw usa, is a real trend, and cooler. Please women be strong it is ONLY HAIR, , Take CONTROL as you have, be stronger, and NEVER compromise!

Before we judge India, let's remember this: We're currently prosecuting a woman who was shot 5 times in the abdomen for the murder of her own unborn child. THIS IS WHAT WE'VE BECOME.

The article makes sure to mention that the victims were either Hindu or Buddhist. But no mention of the religion of the attackers. Mohammed and his Muslim buddies need to be given maximum prison time.
This is the same country that people take a dump in the middle of the street or any place convenient!

More wonderful stories about the wonderful culture of India.
What do you bet they use their religion to justify what they did to this women, while the men that supposedly participated in this prostitution ring get NO punishment. It is just like the Evangelicals in the US they condemn women who abort a fetus that was the result of rape/incest, BUT they never do anything to condemn the men that perpetrated the crime that led to the pregnancy.

I don't understand the disconnect. Wouldn't the guys doing this be upset if this happened to their wives or daughters? This is a cultural problem.

The article mentioned Hindus and Buddhists yet the name of the head assailant was Mohammed. Fake news covering up Muslim violence.

On top of everything the police co ption in India and Pakistan is rampant. The bribes go upto the ministers. How can anyone expect justice?

Nothing will change... not until men are executed for behaving this way.
Nothing as furious as the wrath of scorned gang of men.

This article clearly has an agenda. It mentions Hindus and Buddhists yet the criminal’s name is Mohammed. The religion of peace struck here and it’s obvious.
I don’t understand this story. If the police know that the women’s story is true, that they were assaulted, why was their heads shaved?

The people in India have some internal behavior readjustment issues to attend to. It would be welcomed by the world if they enacted & enforced necessary laws for the protection of women & children.
Sounds like these would-be rapists were a bit embarrassed that two women fought off 6 men....kudos to these ladies. Maybe they took some kind of self defense course. India really needs to do something about their rape problem. Start cutting off willies, its out of hand.

Well, all women should shave heads then!
This makes me so angry, why do men think they can abuse women in any way and not be fought back!

All over the world men are not held accountable and women are shamed. Yet people wonder why women take so long to come forward or don't at all. Backwards world we live in.
Disgusting. Though I would proudly parade around the town with my bald head. As a warning. Not. Today.

Every time a here a story like this, I am glad that I live in America. We certainly have our problems, but at least we are not India.

Rape is a part of the culture over there. They need some deep seeded cultural changes over there. India seems to be left in the dark gases when it comes to women’s rights. Rape is prevalent in “modernized” western countries. I can’t imagine how much sexual assault there is in countries such as India, which actually applaud the crime as a form of misogynistic punishment and culture.

We should put international pressure on India to get them to do something about these h an rights abuses, in this day and age things like this should be unheard of
