India warships sent to strategic Gulf waters: navy
New Delhi (AFP) - India has sent warships and stepped up aerial surveillance in strategic Gulf waters, the Press Trust of India reported on Thursday, with global tensions rising in the region.
"INS Chennai and INS Sunayna have been deployed in the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf to undertake maritime security operations," the navy said, quoted by PTI.
The aim is "to re-assure the Indian-flagged vessels operating/transiting through the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, following the maritime security incidents in the region," the navy said.
US President Donald Trump on Thursday said Iran made a "big mistake" by shooting down a US spy drone. The Pentagon said the downing occurred in international air space but Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps said the drone had violated Iran's air corridor.
Washington had already accused Iran of carrying out attacks on tanker vessels in the Strait of Hormuz area, which links the Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, and through which much of the world's oil passes.
"Aerial surveillance by IN aircraft is also being undertaken in the area," India's navy said, according to PTI.
India's ambassador to Washington said in May that his energy-hungry nation had ended all imports of oil from Iran, in response to threatened US sanctions.

That is the route where India gets most of their energy from. Block that route, India gets into an energy crisis

All the USA companies in China talking to India about moving there , USA might have a new best buddy

There are a lot of nations that depend on ships getting through those waters, and Iran is making some very big mistakes.

Where are the Japanese and Communist Chinese ships? They profit most from Iranian oil.

Good to see a country other than the US protecting oil shipments.

Good for the Indians! I hope they are coordinating their efforts with the USN and RN. And once they again have an operational carrier, I hope it too takes part. We, the US and Britain should do all in our power to help modernize and train Indian military forces. Other than Israel, they're the best friends the western world has in the Indian Ocean Area.

I'd say India is playing it smart and picking their sides. There are a lot of countries to get oil from. No need to risk alienating yourself from any major trade partners. And with fight between the US and China, companies are going to need a lot of cheap labor. India is more than happy to fill that role.

Of Course Iran said it was in it's airspace, Iran claims the Whole Persian Gulf as it's territorial waters

Are NATO allies send or plan to send war ships there?

Thank you India we remember our allies and thank you President Trump. Without your credibility this would not be happening.

India needs to safeguard its Oil imports & ships, India developed a strategic Chabahar Port in Iran. India needs to save its assets.

China wants to be a superpower. Where are their ships? They import more oil than anyone.

Iran did make a mistake. If the coordinates of the drone are proven to be in international airspace, they'll find out that Trump is no Obama and there's nothing Russian or China or even the EU can do a thing about it.

Here's a HINT; India is NOT a 'US Ally' here, or anywhere else. Iran has been India's LARGEST supplier of oil, and has only JUST stopped importing oil from Iran because of US sanctions AGAINST India (which they are reciprocating, just like China). India is there to protect their OWN tankers, and have little time or interest in anyone else. And here's a HINT; if you don't know about the power and strength of the Indian navy, you have some 'catching up' to do!

thank you. about time SOMEBODY stepped up. Norwegian and Japanese ships were hit, NO response from them. enough of the US playing world cop alone.

Iran has stepped in it deeper than they think. They are tampering with the world's oil supply, and not just us. Up next I expect to see Germany and Japan send a few things down there also. Iran is about to find themselves facing multiple nations ... alone. Russia will know better than to step in this time after what they went through in Syria, and after so many nations begin to stare Iran down.

At least India is sending warships to protect Indian-flagged vessels. Makes sense. Why is the US trying to make an issue out of oil tankers owned by foreign countries? Makes no sense, except to please Israel and feed the US military-industrial complex.

Same thing happened in 87. Every country sent their navy to the persian gulf. Iran was attacking oil tankers and container ships.

All American companies should leave China and move to India. Their population is the same, but their culture is much more compatible with the west. In addition, we can get them to agree to IP laws with negotiations from the start instead of trying to join a trade war 30 years in progress in which we’ve done nothing but concede.

Maybe India can deescalate tensions in the middle East and send U.S. back home to take care of the millions of Americans dying without health care.
