Plane hijacker is shot dead by Bangladesh commandos after using a toy gun to take a crew member hostage and forcing the plane to land because of 'troubles with his wife'

A 25-year-old man who was shot dead when trying to hijack a Bangladesh Airlines flight using a toy gun, had been having 'troubles with his wife', police say.

The man, named only as Mahadi, used the gun to take a crew member hostage while also demanding to speak with the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG 147, which was flying to the UAE from Dhaka on Sunday, was forced to make an emergency landing at Chittagong, before commandos moved in and shot Mahadi dead.

Kusum Dewan, additional commissioner of Chittagong police, said the man 'appeared to be mentally imbalanced.' 'We heard he had a personal issue with his wife and demanded to speak to the prime minister. But we are still investigating. 'We don't want to come to any conclusions right now.'

During the hijacking, the man had claimed to have a gun and a bomb, however the weapon turned out to be a toy and no explosives were found on him.

One passenger told reporters he may have fired the weapon twice, but civil aviation authority chairman Air Vice Marshall Nayeem Hasan said the gun he was carrying was not real.

'According to those who have seen it, it appears that the gun was fake,' Hasan said.

All 142 other passengers disembarked from the flight safely.  Authorities are now focusing on how he managed to smuggle even a fake gun past security at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

'An inquiry is underway,' the civil aviation chief said.

It was a toy gun but that is beside the point, if you take a plane full of passengers hostage you can assume the commandos will treat it as real until they know differently and they will shoot you, its not the UK you know.
