China's latest luxury hotel yesterday opened inside an abandoned quarry after nearly a decade of construction.

InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland, a much-anticipated £225 million project, is built onto one side of an 88-metre-deep (289-foot-deep) pit in the south-western outskirts of the financial hub.

Dra down the rocky pit as if a glitzy waterfall, the 17-storey, 336-room hotel has two floors above the ground and 15 floors underneath, including two lowest levels that are submerged in a man-made pond.

Although the hotel's opening ceremony was held yesterday, guests will only be able to check in from next Tuesday, according to a spokesperson.

Most of its rooms look out to an artificial waterfall on the other side of the quarry; and the deeper it goes, the more lavish the rooms are.

In the underwater suites, guests would be able to observe schools of fish outside their window while enjoying full butler service.

A seafood restaurant, called Mr Fisher, is located one floor below the water level.

The hotel also boasts a series of adventurous activities, including rock climbing, kayaking and a stroll on a glass-bottomed footpath, as well as a nightly light show.

In a city renowned for its shiny skyscrapers, the quarry hotel emerges as a unique 'groundscraper', an edifice built downwards into the ground instead of upwards towards the sky.

Its deepest level is nearly 700 metres (2,297 feet) lower than the top floor of the J Hotel, which is set to be the highest hotel in the world and is also under construction in Shanghai.

The spectacular hotel, more widely known as the 'deep pit hotel' to the locals, is situated at the foot of Shanghai's Tianma Mountain. The quarry it is in was first excavated in 1950s and deserted in 2000.

The idea of building a high-end resort there was proposed in 2006 by Xu Rongmao, chairman of the hotel's developer Shanghai Shimao Group.

After visiting the derelict quarry, Mr Xu, who had been to many 'crazy' hotels around the world, wondered if he could build an even crazier one in the open pit.

'[I] want to turn the city's scar into its treasure,' Mr Xu told Shanghai-based Jiemian News last year.

Shimao purchased the land in 2006 and ground was broken in 2009.

Nine years and two billion yuan (£225 million) later, Mr Xu's dream has finally come true.

For the building's architects from London-headquartered firm Atkins, to design a building 'that is essentially upside down' has proven to be a pioneering experience.

The hotel's unusual settings make it possible for the team to design environmental-friendly features. One of them is the hotel's ventilation.

Because there is a pond at the bottom of the quarry, the air outside the bottom of the hotel is cooled by the water.

Therefore, architects have made it possible for the cooler air to be drawn into the building at the deeper floors. As the air is warmed up by people and equipment inside the building, it will get warmer and then rise through the building to vent out at the top floor above the ground, creating a natural air circulation.

On the other hand, some of the rock face is exposed in the interior of the building, providing an ideal thermal mass to help regulate the building's temperature.

On the official booking app of InterContinental Hotels Group, rooms can be booked from December 1 and onwards at a starting nightly price of 3,325 yuan (£371).

Wonderfully creative. I hope our government has some of this vision to turn all those brownfield sites in Britain into something useful.

I must say the hotel look beautiful but I like nature more. The rich destroy the natural landscape. Young generation don't get to see the old mountain landscape.
