TIRUPUR: In yet another instance of deep-roed casteism practised in the hinterland, a group of non-dalit parents objected to a dalit cook preparing noon meal in a go nment school where their children were studying and threatened to disrupt the school’s functioning if she continued to work there.

The block development officer gave in to their pressure and cancelled the deputation order given to the cook on Wednesday. But after the dalits staged a prest on Thursday, Tirupur subcollector Shravan Kumar intervened and directed that the dalit woman continue in the same school. An FIR was registered ag inst 75 men and women of the Gounder community who prevented her from working.

PPappal of Thirumigoundenpyam in Avinashi taluk, who belonged to the arunthathiyar community, joined the noon-meal scheme service in 2006. After 19 noon-meal cooks retired from service on June 30, the revenue department issued transfer orders to many cooks, including Pappal.

“At my request, the authorities agreed to post me in one of two schools in my own village. When the authorities gave an oral order that I can work in the Thirumigoundenpyam go nment primary school last week, I went there. But the gounders warned me not to work in the school, and I did not join,” Pappal told TOI.

“On July 16, the authorities gave a temporary transfer order, at my request, to work in the high school in the village. When I joined work the next day, many people from the gounder community stopped me from cooking food for the noon meal,” she added.

Said M Sasik, headmistress of the school which has 75 students: “Many people, including the parents of 29 students, wanted Pappal to be transferred to some other school. They told me that they felt uncomfortable about their children taking food cooked by her. They wanted me to grant leave for their children. They submitted leave letters, as I requested, and took their children home.”

“On Thursday morning, the same people stopped us from opening the school and demanded that Pappal not be allowed to work there. So, we informed this to Avinashi block development officer VMeenakshi,” said Sasik.

Caste-based humiliation occurred often in the village, says Pappal’s husband

BDO Meenakshi said, “As the parents objected, I cancelled the deputation order given to Pappal to work in the Thirumigoundenpyam go nment high school and shifted her to the Ochampyam go nment primary school where she was working earlier.”

Pappal’s husband T C Pnisamy said it was not the first time she had been humiliated by the gounders. “When she joined service in 2006, she was stopped from working in go nment primary schools at Kandhayipyam, Vaiyyapurigoundenpudur and also at our village Thirumigoundenpyam as she was from the arunthathiyar community.” Such caste-based humiliation was common in the village which had 320 gounder families and 70 arunthathiyar families, he said.

So, I wanted to get a transfer to my own village. But I was targeted because of my caste,” said Pappal, whose child studies in the same school.

When contacted, a member of the gounder community who did not want to be named said: “We are only ag inst Pappal working here. We are ready to accept a cook even from a dalit community if she is from another place.”

Meanwhile, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes summoned the Tirupur collector and the superintendent of police to appear before it to expn the humiliation faced by a noon-meal cook.

I being a brahmin have no objection eating food from any community provided that food is of my choice, clean, hygienic served in clean utensils and in a very refreshing environment.

I usually avoid eating in roadside eateries!! when ever i go out i prefer fruits. when all options are closed i eat in roadside dhabas!! I want eat food but don't want to fall ill.
