I’ve never used mobile payment in all my trips to China, though I have used my credit cards once or twice. For me and virtually every other tourist in China, cash is king.

The only time I’ve seen it in action was last year, when my friend — who lives in Shanghai — bought a couple of congyoubing from a street vendor and paid for it using Alipay. Imagine trying that with a street vendor in the Philippines.

I like mobile payments. Really. It is more convenient than carrying cash, simply for the fact that getting and carrying cash is a pain. You have to remember to go to an ATM, it takes up space in your wallet to carry very much of it, and it sucks if you run out before resupplying.

Don Johnson, I have lived in China for a long time.

Ironically, I went out to a late movie last weekend and made sure to bring cash because my mobile phone was almost out of power. Sure enough, the phone died - but the cash was no help at all because I could not hail a taxi without the phone. I ended up sharing a cab with a stranger who felt sorry for me, and came home with the same cash I left with!

The transition has really been incredibly fast. Even last year I would hear people saying “I never bring my wallet any more” or “you don’t need cash any more” and I considered it pretty exaggerated. But it’s true.

So far, I have always paid cash in China. The problem is that I don’t have a bank account in China and that is a prerequisite to using mobile payment in China.

But even my wife and her relatives who have Chinese bank accounts mostly paid in cash on our latest visit (February 2018). The one big exception was the highway toll, which was always paid via ETC. But I would not consider that mobile payment. However, on her latest business trip to China my wife hardly used cash.

So I guess it has a lot to do with where you are. In 1st / 2nd tier cities it seems that most payments are handled without cash nowadays.

Well, I was in China a week ago, so, a week ago is my answer. As easy as it is for Chinese people to go cashless it is hard for foreigners (especially tourists) to take advantage of it. I can't use WeChat Pay if I don't have a bank account and my friends and I had to borrow somebody else's bank account to be able to pay effortlessly while in China.

Carrying cash in China is like carrying a piece of paper that is not really useful. You either have it in small nominals or you can't make cash payments because the vendors don't have the changes, especially if you're hanging at not-so-touristy areas. I had to pay 110 RMB for a meal and I only had 100 RMB notes, and the restaurant owner ended up letting me pay 100 RMB because she doesn't have cash changes. My friends was refused to shop in local 7/11 because they don't have cash changes and my friends only had big notes.

Hailing cabs? Eating out? Paying for things? Shopping? Buying tickets? All are virtually cashless now. Good for them, not too good for us.

I’m a tourist and I do not hold a Mainland Chinese ID which you apparently need to use a lot of the apps, so cash is HUANG DI for me.

Also, every summer we go to rural/small-town Guangxi to teach English for two weeks. Its far, far away from Shanghai my friend. Cash is HUANG Di there just like it was pre-2015 or whenever it was wechat pay got popular on the coast

YES, China is by far the most successful Country on Mobile Payment. In China, mobile payment has become part of people daily life:Money Transfertbetween peoples, shopping, food, movie, taxi, paying my rent fees, my electricity bills, … almost everything you can imagine.

According to recent studies, per year, Chinese Mobile Payment surpassed 560 Billions US Dollars. Mobile Payments are accepted in all major cities from supermarket, food stores to snack vendors

A lot of street food vendors here now have big QR code signs attached to their food carts.

I’d say this is quite successful.

It’s a great model for other developing markets. It skips credit cards. Consumers can pay with their own money and free of debt worries. Merchants can save the cost of paying transaction fees to visa and mastercard. Eliminating the middleman makes the economy more efficient.

Huang Xiaoying(黃小穎)

Mobile payments in developed countries: As far as I can see, Japan, the last trip to Japan, in Tokyo, Fuji, Kyoto, Nara, Osaka and other regions, can use credit card payments, many stores have introduced China's Alipay, which makes My travel is very convenient.

I am Chinese. I think that China has done a good job in mobile payments. In all transactions, I have already got rid of the use of cash. I live in Guangzhou and I have not used cash in my bag. We usually use Alipay or Wechat for payment. .

Between cash payment and electronic payment, I prefer to use electronic payment, which is very convenient and quick.

Ty Conner, 8+ years in China

I haven’t carried a single piece of cash for the past 8 months because everywhere takes either WeChat Pay or Alipay.

Mobile payments now makes up for 80% of all expenditures in China, better than any other country in the world, I posit.

Logan Brouse, Bar Owner

One of the many reasons I love living in Shanghai is not having to worry about bringing cash or cards with me. With the ease of Alipay and Wechat payment has never been simpler. Almost every business, taxi and service takes these forms of payments and I think it’s a reason while mobile here is so much more advanced then back in the West where I’m from. I particularly like that I only need my house keys and my phone and I’m set for the day.

Abby Sher

Of course by phones,it is more convenient, you can pay by phones for just 2 seconds, while others are counting the cash.

Two reasons I can think of…

Chinese love to show off their proficiency with the latest technology.
Counterfeiting is a huge problem.

China is leading the mobile internet worldwide.

Several years ago, there is a hot topic in Chinese forums:the time of mobile internet(移动互联网时代) was coming. In that moment, almost everyone talked about mobile internet. But here in Quora, even today, “mobile internet ” this noun seldom comes to my mind . I see Chinese world are talking mobile internet more than English world. While mobile payment is just one thing of mobile internet.

So why China can lead mobile internet?

There are no tough rivals can compete with Chinese. Mobile internet is a thing that follows internet. Except US, is there any internet company exists worldwide? Does Europe have any big internet companies? Does Japan have any big internet companies? Only China and US have their own internet industry, while that is common that China have something advanced than US.

Chinese government are not forbidden mobile payments. Let's assume that if EU have had their own internet industry, hardly can we say that the mobile payment can survive because the strict laws in financial system. Just see Uber in Europe.

Robin Yan, lives in China

I think there are several factors boosting the popularization of mobile payment.

The prosperity of online shopping, which changes Chinese people’s consuming habits, meanwhile popularizing the usage of third party payment.

The popularization of smartphones and 4G mobile network enable people to finish payment though mobile apps like Wechat and Alipay as quick as possible.

The government supports internet+ industries. Many newly born unicorns develop their products connected to third party payment, which accelarates the popularization of mobile payment.

Katie Pedro, VP Operations, China at KSV eSports (2018-present)

Because Alipay has been used as online payment for a very long time. China has a very robus eCommerce business thanks to Taobao and JD, as well as thousands of small or nitch eCommerce players. Majority of the population are very familiar of online payment. It takes just one step further from online to offline.

Key ingredients are there. China has been leading development of QR code. QR code makes Mobil payment even easier. The receiving side don't even need a phone, only a printed QR code is sufficient.

Convenient. You don’t have carry your card everywhere.

As we all know, Alibaba and Tencent is the world's mobile payment giant company, is to promote the world's mobile payment economy to flourish, China is the world's largest population, has a huge payment of spending power.

Qingzhou Wu, lives in China (1989-present)

I am a Chinese and have been living in china. In many foreigners lamented how convenient before I never feel it what should be reported in mobile payment (just let our life becomes easy), because it is soundless and stirless came to my side, I use it, and feel it is behoove and ordinary. So I'm surprised! Are the developed countries not even popular with this stuff?

Benjamin R Williams, Digital Editor, Roving Storyteller, and Adventurer Archaeologist based in China.

If you're referring to WeChat pay or Alipay, they have ups and downs. The biggest up is convenience. Once your bank account is linked to WeChat, you are easy able to pay anyone anywhere for anything. Most time, places won't take cards, local or foreign. Even if the store doesn't have a scanner for WeChat pay, an employee will usually just accept payment.

Wang Ya

It is very convenient, and I think mobile payment will be future.

Mobile payments help China saved a lot of money by reducing the cash.

You can use a telephone to buy almost everything you want. Even take a taxi or buy a 2 yuan breakfast. You needn't take changes and the store won't worry about no changes anymore.

Mobile payment in China is great. Whether in a supermarket or a streetside noodle cart, you can use Alipay or WeChat.

Even beggars in China now have QR codes which you can scan if you don’t have change to give them.
