The Classical Gardens of Suzhou in Jiangsu Province, China, were founded in the 6th Century, at a time that the city was capital of the Wu Kingdom.
The oldest known of these gardens is the Canglang Pavilion, which was built in the 11th century on the site of another destroyed garden, making this the oldest garden still in use today.

Visited these about 15 years ago. This photo does not do the gardens justice, they are really amazing. Quick Google Image search for Suzhou Gardens is worth it. :)

I had the privilege of doing the whole tourist-thing in China last summer, and all of Suzhou is just so pretty. It's no wonder all the artists used to go there.
Next time, I'd like to go back in spring. To see the flowers blooming, but also because it is stiflingly hot. Worth it, though, as you said :)

Just spent 10 minutes with my 7 year old dAzaughter looking at the gardens and now she wants to learn Chinese and go there.

I just moved to suzhou, planning to go visit some of the gardens here next weekend. Can't wait.
