NEW DELHI: Army has brought out heavy artillery to fight the growing problem of obesity within its ranks. A new set of instructions said overweight personnel were a “public embarrassment due to slovenly appearance in uniform”.
Stung with observations from the top echelons of the government on the expanding waistlines of some officers, the Army HQ has prescribed stringent steps to check a “trend on the increase”. “The issue has serious ramifications, not only affecting combat readiness+ but also leading to avoidable ailments resulting in reduced life span in addition to public embarrassment due to slovenly appearance in uniform,” the instruction, sent to all commands on August 8 read.
The instructions for ‘enforcement measures to help check the menace of obesity’ have been sent for comments to all Army Commands. Officers and soldiers will be subjected to an annual obesity evaluation examination in case they ‘appear to be overweight’ and a set of photographs would be attached to their evaluation files.
Among the methods prescribed are a bar on overweight personnel to be considered for foreign postings, career courses or even tenures at ‘A Class’ cities. Overweight personnel will not be allowed for reemployment and would lose out on career advancement. Sources told ET that the crackdown is a personal initiative of Army chief Dalbir Singh, who is known for his exceptional fitness who still finds time to run 10 km daily.
Same should be adopted with our police personnel
And politicians also, not only for their stomachs but, for their bulging bank accounts.
Yes also for politicians and civil servants…they are bloated
Yes for police also – Alongwith their waist – also their pockets for under the table income…
Police career jobs are more ”rewarding” compared to military career.
Especially in A.P. and Telangana more than 80% of police personnel have big bellies probably they not only eat money but also free food.
well this is very good.. should we also start such programs in school.. healthier kids.. healthier nation..
Police also should be given the same set of guidelines, I see young constables on roads with very big waistlines.
In India the greatest luxury and joy is eating and no work.
Very right Army must be fit and smart in health NO obesity should be seen in solder or Officer.
Same applies to police, isnt it?
People ought to feel respect (not fear) and safety with a policeman around.
Even though obese Army personnel are a rare sight, this seems to be an inspiring step by our very own General who leads by example by running 10 kms daily. Awesome

About time! Our soldiers are our pride. And due to lack of war, they have become fat. Let”s enforce fitness upon them and with the natural Indian imagination they will become unstoppable.
