RIO DE JANEIRO: India's Kidambi Srikanth played his heart out before going down fighting against two-time defending champion Lin Dan in the quarter-finals of the men's singles badminton event at the Rio Olympics on Wednesday.
The 21-year-old from Guntur, who had beaten the five-time World Champion from China in the 2014 China Open final, suffered a 6-21, 21-11, 18-21 loss against the World No. 3 Chinese in a nerve-wrecking match that lasted for an hour and four minutes.
Lin Dan will now take on his long-time rival and two-time Olympic silver medallist Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia in a mouth-watering semi-final clash. The top seed beat sixth seed Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei 21-9, 21-15.
all the players are losing in quarters..this is common in this olympics..
I saw the match. He shud have beaten Lin Dan with some temperament.. He played the better shots. 1st game he just gave away
Against Lin Dan!Wow!you managed to win a set.Nobody expected that.
It is really sad that Srikanth after a stiff fight and ourhopes of medal lies with Sindhu in badminton
PHANTOM THE GHOST
Sensantional Boss! You made Lin Dan sweat under pants... You are a Hero for us!
Good that at least he went up to the quarters. Well done.
Well played, Srikanth. You did all of us proud. For once, we could see somebody as formidable as Chinese shuttlers looking grim and tense. You went down fighting and not tamely.
Srikanth even though you lost you have proved you have the full potential to become the world no 1 and dominate the men''s badminton for years....
Kidambi played great game.... But experience of chinese mattered in end.... Way to go Kidambi, we r proud of your efforts....
Well played game. Just two points away. But a great comeback after losing the first set
