BEIJING: Chinese drivers are rushing to buy sport-utility vehicles in an "arms race" for safety on the country's hair-raising roads, analysts say, as SUV sales hit the gas despite a slowing economy.
SUV purchases in the world's number one car market surged more than 50 percent in the first quarter of 2016 from a year earlier, while sedan sales fell 9.3 percent, according to industry data.
"It's about people's desire to feel safe on the roads. Because [SUVs] are bigger, and in low-speed collisions, from a consumer psychology point of view, you'd rather be the one in the SUV."
Another 50 models new to the Chinese market will go into production in the country this year, according to consultancy IHS Automotive, many of them to be showcased at the Beijing Auto Show opening Monday.

In Most Countries the Road Accident Fatalities are due to Flouting of Rules and Safety Norms. Bigger Minds and not Bigger Cars are the Need of the Hour.
I do not think in "most countries" but in India certainly. People with car think people on the road are stupid and they look down on them. They honk, they splash water and what not...even killed them. Whereas in developed countries like Germany honking in residential area, honking at people are not common ( I do not know whether it is illegal, but I have not seen).
No SUV can beat the safety of going at safe speed and driving with discipline.. even though u just have a hatch back.
These vehicles occupy more space on the roads...
Indian buyers looks for features and cost benefits rather than safety
Good. Road safety is important.
Safety is important no doubt. How safe are Chinese products that's major concern.
People are now aware of Safety and safe cars so they are going towards SUVs.......
SUV's are little bit more safer than hatchback cars..
same goes for many developing nations. Indonesia, China or any country where there is value for life.
Driving on roads with responsibility of lives of all road users should be taught to reduce the accidents and road rages.
People seems to be obsessed with SUV's
