HONG KONG: All the radar systems, lighthouses, barracks, ports and airfields that China has set up on its newly built island chain in the South China Sea require tremendous amounts of electricity, which is hard to come by in a place hundreds of miles from the country's power grid.
Beijing may have a solution: floating nuclear power plants.
A state-owned company, China Shipbuilding Industry Corp., is planning to build a fleet of the vessels to provide electricity to remote locations including offshore oil platforms and the contentious man-made islands, the state-run newspaper Global Times reported on Friday.
The paper quoted a company executive, Liu Zhengguo, as saying that "demand is pretty strong" for the floating power stations.
In January, Xu Dazhe, the director of the China Atomic Energy Authority, told reporters that China was planning to develop floating nuclear energy plants, saying they "must undergo a rigorous, scientific evaluation," but also linking these to China's desire to become a "maritime power."

US won't dare to do this. ...For last couple of years, China has been developing Nuke and NK has been showing this !.
China should be aware of this In a case of Tsunami it will go doom and they will face same consequences as Japan :-)
Vow, imperialist China is ready to leave imperialist USA behind!!!!
china made ? it will sink soon ! LOL !
A threat to the surrounding neighbours
Its same technology as nuclear powered aircraft carrier. In this case a ship installed with nuclear plant but much smaller in size than aircraft carrier. INS Vishal is also most probably going to be nuclear powered, to be commissioned in 2025.
Safety will be main concern.
Any chinese product does not work when it needs most.
Greenpeace, WWF etc... environmental organisations mettle will be tested. But the risk of nuclear disaster is less on China more on ASEAN nations. This is very dangerous. Strategically China has planted atomic weapon on doorsteps of other countries
