NEW DELHI: India and the United States have agreed in principle to share military logistics, US defense secretary Ashton Carter said on Tuesday, as both sides seek to counter the growing maritime assertiveness of China.
Washington has been urging New Delhi to sign the Logistics Support Agreement that allows the two militaries to use each other's land, air and naval bases for resupplies, repair and rest.
But after years of dithering, the two sides said an agreement was in hand, although not yet ready for signing.
"We have agreed in principle that all the issues are resolved. We now need to finalise the draft," Carter said after talks with his defence minister Manohar Parrikar.
New Delhi has had concerns that the logistics agreement will draw it into a military alliance with the United States and undermine its traditional autonomy.
New Delhi is keen to access US technology for PM Modi's "Make in India" plans to build a domestic defence industrial base and cut expensive arms imports.
Very crucial and necessary .............
Crucial and necessary, yes. Our earlier fascination with USSR has cost us dearly in terms of progress. It is good to see that the Indian government has becoming wiser. But then there are quite a few old fogies in India who stand ready to bark at the old enemy at the behest of masters long since gone.
Not required. Let China do any expansion of navy within South China Sea. It is not going to affect us. USA cannot fool us any more. Our enemy is Pakistan. So long USA supply military equipment's and spares to Pakistan we cannot trust USA. We are not worried about China. and we have no interest in Taiwan like USA, Taiwan is a part of China. . .
US seems to be confused. On one side, it gives Pakistan F-16 and other military gadgets and they want Indian help too. We should make our demand clear to ensure they give importance to our concern.
next cold war will be between India and China.
we are all divided based on countries. If there is yet another superpower (aliens), the same divided-humans will work as a single force and at the time of war everyone would trust everyone. Chinese trust India, India trust US like that..
India has no option considering hostility of China and Pakistan combine. Can't remain neutral. Will have to see that US doesn't act like big brother.
India had neglected it's nation building and defence capability for sixty years. It is too late to catch up while China is building along the borders at breakneck speed with its massive resources.
India has become an american dependency and in process lost its independence. So sad.
Very good suggestions. India can put a condition on USA for this move- not to sell weapons to countries which are enemies of India.
