Anirban Chatterjee, Indian medical student in China (3
Honest answer- It's weird.I'm studying Medicine in China, & I am now reaching the end of my second year living in the city of Wuhan. This would otherwise be a confusing, muddled answer, so let me write in the form of pros and cons instead.First, for the reasons why it feels weird.

Cons: 弊
1: Bias and Xenophobia (aversion to outsiders): As with many Indians, Chinese will stare at you as if you're walking naked. Be it in the metros or on the street, they will look at you like you're on fire or something. They also have a negative preconception about Indians, Blacks, or any non-Chinese, for that matter. The Chinese are among the most racist people on the planet. Although some natives consider India to be "beautiful" & "just like China", many others consider Indians to be unhygienic and smelly.

2: Language: Easily the defining factor in making day-to-day life inconvenient in China. This is not the the case in Beiing or Shanghai. In smaller cities, however, if you have to stay for an extended period of time, you're dead without Mandarin. No one speaks English anywhere outside Beiing or Shanghai. Except for some university staff, communication is often broken and inconvenient. The only saving grace here is their efficient infrastructure.

3: Winters: The winters in China suck. Beiing records a consistent -10 to -15 ° C in Mid - February. Wuhan, where I stay, records an easy 0 to -5°C. It's almost impossible to wake up in the mornings and attend class. There are also increased chances of death-by-electrocution due to kee the bed-heater on the whole night!

4: Food: For an Indian, this will be the most difficult part about life here. Chinese food is so boring, I imagine the color grey when I think about it. Compared to our Indian delicacies, it's like chewing grass. If you're fond of spicy Indian masala snacks like Pani Puri and Chaat, you're going to die of frustration trying to find interesting food here. Cooking regularly is a must. With spices brought from home.

5: The Great Firewall of China: Yes. That's what it's called. Even the Chinese themselves hate the government's internet restrictions. For an Indian, it's terrifying. Facebook, Blogspot, Twitter, Google and it's products, and many other websites at random. If a non-chinese website opens without requiring a VPN, consider yourself lucky.

6: Smells: Yes. Smells. In China, you'll find some really funny smells. Most of them come from street food, but even otherwise, it gets really annoying sometimes.

7: Lack of Civic Sense: Chinese are lot like Indians this way. No respect for queues, and a hell-lot of pushing and pulling. They'll use subtle means to get ahead of others, whether in a queue or to get a seat in a packed metro. The traffic here is much more organized than back home though.

Now for the good parts:

Pros: 利

1: Infrastructure: China has one of the best infrastructures for a develo/semi - developed country. Coming from a small city like Pune, it's like step into another dimension every time I land back in China. It reminds me of Dubai (where I used to live previously). The infrastructure in India is nothing compared to that of China.

2: Summer: Wuhan, the city I study in, has the most erratic weather in China. That being said, it's still the better place to stay in from April to July. Temperatures in February lie below zero. However, the climate becomes quite pleasant from March end onwards, and lies at around 30°c in June. At noon.Compare that to the "41°c" being shown on my weather widget for a May midnight in Pune.

3:Special Treatment: In China, foreign students are treated like VIPs. Whether in the university or buying street food, foreigners are given a lot of attention in general. Many foreigners also use that to their advantage to break queues.

4: Freedom: From the point of view of a university student, China is the best place to study if you want to "enjoy your college life". Like in India, China has very strict restrictions for their Chinese students. However, the rules are made lax for foreign students. No curfew rules at night, no attendence rules for class. I think it's simply because the Chinese don't care that much about the international students.

5: Internet speed: The Chinese are among the most active people of the world on the Internet. They're always with their phones, always "online". As a result (or because of better infrastructure), mobile data packs in China are wonderfully economical for the speeds they generate. Same goes for WiFi connectivity. Super-fast. On a good day, I downloaded the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe in half a day.

6: Friendliness: Although not the norm, some Chinese people are friendly and open to exhanging ideas for mutual benefit. A very common example between students: "You teach me English, I teach you Chinese". Many street food vendors are friendly to us foreigners, and they give us special discounts! Shopkeepers also love it when we visit their shops! They treat us like special people.

7: Transparency: It's very easy to get things done in China, if you know Mandarin. Their systems are way more efficient than the corrupt, lazy offices you'd find in India. If they give you a date, they stick to it.

8: Work Ethic: Huge difference between Chinese and Indians. Chinese are meticulous and love their work. They're highly inventive and efficient too.

Andy Lee Chaisiri, a thousand years of family history(4
I'm not really sure why, but every Indian man I've met that lives in China has a blonde girlfriend. Those guys also studied in the west (US and Britain) though. So it seems many Indians in China came there after studying in the west, and hang out mostly with western immigrants.
