JAKARTA (Indonesia): Indonesia’s top development official said the government is studying proposals from China and Japan for construction of a high-speed rail line and expects to announce the outcome later this month.
Andrinof Chaniago, the national development planning minister, told reporters Tuesday that a decision on which proposal to accept could be made in about two weeks.
The high-speed rail, which will connect the capital Jakarta to Bandung, is part of Indonesia’s 750-kilometer (466-mile) high-speed train project that would cut across four provinces on the main island of Java and end in the country’s second largest city of Surabaya.
Indonesia will do well to go with Japan as it will assure them the best as Japan is known for its quality. In China the goods are not quality controlled but this will be a cheaper option for sure as compared to the Japanese. So what do they choose, Quality or cost effectiveness? Only time will tell.

INDIA seems to be doing the smart thing of colloberating with SPAIN to achieve almost the same with minimal upgrade of existing tracks.If that turns to be a success INDIA can have MANY highspeed routes across the country which can compete with airlines too.Nothing like competition promoting innovation&quality at minimal cost increase.INDIAN improvisation like in mangalayan.
India has changed the very definition of high speed. In India,160 kmph is high speed.
Minimum upgrade?? That is questionable . , knowing India’s train safety record, lot of improvements to tracks, bridges would have to take place to ensure safety
But Jay that is far better than starting to lay separate trac for high speed trains with added politics,expense&other cost over runs.INDIAN railways have lots to improve before looking into SPEED for which there is AIR TRAVEL for all parts of INDIA.
